Borderline hearing test

The test was done by a highly “papered” Audi at the ENT office. She also told me that Blue tooth did not exist for HA and put me in Starkey’s, wound up at Costco fitted with Bernafon Verite, been very happy ever since.

Not sure what all of SRT to Discrim means, is there some correlation between the 2?

I can tell you unaided I don’t “get” most conversations or certain words, children voices are all a mumble even in a quiet environments

It is time for a new test, I will go elsewhere

Your SRT is your speech reception threshold - basically the SOFTEST point at which you can correctly repeat back words. Your Speech Discrimination is when the audi turns up the volume, how many words can your repeat back correctly.

I agree that your SRT seems low, but maybe the person was speaking too loudly and not keeping the VU meter at 0, who knows.

And although I dont personally, I have seen professionals who mask when performing speech discrim testing no matter what thresholds are. The basis for this is that because speech fluctuates with consonants and vowels, that parts of words could potentially crossover and clue the patient in to the word and affect scores. Basically that crossover values for speech are not the normal interaural attenuation values because speech fluctuates. Again, I don’t think its a concern really, but some audis do in fact test this way. It doesn’t mean the audi is incompetent, just has a different view on things. It would never affect what hearing aids you were fit with and how properly.

Are you really sure of what you are hearing in the background? I am suspecting that it might be a repetition of some noise that you heard not long ago before the test. In fact, if you are suspecting the capabilities of the doctor, I advise you to look for another audiologist as humans are tend to make mistakes. Did you experience things like that when you are talking with someone else? Do let your current audiologist or future audiologist know what you are experiencing, the more you let them know, the more it will help you cure your problem.

I doubt very much that headphones will make a difference either. The whole point is at what volume do I set the stupid thing. I’m going to spend thousands of dollars on hearing aids. I’m certainly not going to decide what aids are best for me based on a do it yourself on line hearing test. Funny, the areas where people decide to cut corners.

My test protocol was the same as the OP’s: even though I cannot hear or understand speech in noise, no sound in noise test was given by my audiologist.

So, I went to an independent hearing center and had that portion of the test. Then I trialled one of their aids. My comprehension improved from 40% unaided to 90% aided.

I went back to the audi with this information, have been dx’ed with auditory processing disorder, and am now trying different aids. (My health insurance actually has hearing aid coverage.) I’ve had one aid for about 3 weeks (Siemens Primax 7px) and am experiencing a “good ear”/“bad ear” effect. So, I’m going to try a couple of Phonak B50 aids.
