Is REM required when inter-changing Custom ear-molds and domes?

I have a replacement set of custom earmolds on order.

I have worn custom earmolds for a year and I have inter-changed them with regular round domes whenever I have any ear issues; wax buildup, ear infections, colds/flus, etc, both have advantages and disadvantages.

My was taken with the custom earmolds and the sound profile works well enough with the domes too.

Should I be concerned when my Audi does the REM with the new custom earmolds?

Should I have her do the REM with the Round Domes instead?

Is there a significant difference?

Talk to your audiologist about this. I would have her/him do using the new molds if that is what you anticipate using most of the time. If the domes have near the same venting as the molds, I would not think there would be enough difference to worry about. Many of us do not have or worry about REM at all.

testing is essential for a proper fit.
The attitude “not to worry about REM at all” after spending thousand$ on a precision instrument is reckless.

Rem, is akin to usen a lensometer to check that your prescription glasses are what indeed the optometrist has prescribe to you.

Hey User246, I agree that the program would likely be different between the Domes and the Custom molds.
My concern is whether to do the test with one or the other, which one to choose? and how different would it be when I decide to interchange the domes to custom molds since I will often change them.

Actually what’s “reckless” is you posting thinking that because you spend thousands on cheap (that can actually be brought for less then a 3rd from Costco) that is mandatory, REM is just another tool in the toolbox, if you think that your hearing is gonna be magically restored because you paid thousands and got REM your sadly mistaken, the forum is full of unhappy members after fitting with REM, but thankfully we have available to those that actually care and want to get better results with their hearing, and yes I’m absolutely happy that you’re a believer in REM, lots of us aren’t.

Keep in mind that only about 30% of audiologists in the US incorporate in their practice. I am not sure I would categorize the other 70% as “reckless.”

I was tested while listening to Shiny Happy People. Is that a legit test?

is the gold standard for good reason. I can tell you that a lot of the bad name attributed to REM is from providers that perform the procedure but ignore the results and use the manufacturer predicted settings instead. It’s more common than most people would expect

when you change the mold or the domes your are effectively changing

the programing, the targets will be different to account for the change of acoustics

your fitter would have to perform a new Rem.

if you look at the # of Rem units vs fitters you will be in for a surprise (world wide). I remember a while a go, the Sensei had a way to measure the without the need to use supplemental machine. As usual, there where a lot of “its a game changer” (like the ones who predicted apple would change the landscape) but it was never a thing people didn’t use it. For those who has the verifit, there is a nice way to see how much did the hearing aid provided VS how much is needed.

Technically it is possible to 2 rems -program 1 with domes , program 2 with mold.
But that is an odd request. Depending on. the brand of hearing aids, I know it wouldn’t be
possible with demand, you can not have 2 programs with different acoustical parameters.
While it is possible to change, the problem I see is the targets.

Oticon allows 2 or more different formulas at the same time, I’m guessing it’s possible to have for each? But yeah you wouldn’t be getting requests like this every day!

Hi, Depending on the Hearing aids you have , the choice is Vac+, Nal1, Nal1, adult DSL pediatric. You can have up to four listening programs, one being General. You can copy the general program and have VAC+ program 1 and NAL 2 if you wish program 2. The problem is before the fitting is you are require to input you acoustical parameters, which is where you need to put the type of dome , micro mold you are going to use. Based on the info the target gain is calculated. However Genie2 will not allow you to pick different acoustical settings per program, therefore, Rem auto fit will only be calculated for the general program.

I was very satisfied with regular domes except I experienced too much feedback. To reduce the feedback I ordered Custom earmolds which did the job, however they came with a new problem: occlusion! as well as a fit that caused me sore ears.
I then decided to trial and purchase the new Widex Allure along with the Custom ear molds.
The new earmolds were still sore so I had them remade @ 10% reduced size.
While waiting for the Custom molds (haven’t received them yet) I’ve found that there is no longer feedback with the new hearing aids and I am thinking of shelving the custom molds when they arrive.
I was satisfied with the off the shelf domes before this started and now that Widex Allure corrected the feedback problem, 2 separate programs will be unnecessary.
I prefer my old off-the-shelf domes, and therefore 1 REM program.

you can pick the acoustics, micro molde, dome, power dome etc. What you can not have is program 1 moulds for acoustics , program 2 dome. Each time you change the acoustics new target gains are computed ,
