I sympathize with you! I have sensoryneural severe hearing loss. Take a look at my experience and solution to date. While I do set my alarm on my iPhone (to be on the safe side, I set it also for the time I need, another +2 minutes, another +3 minutes). Ocasionally, I even then I overhear it.
As a backup, I installed a Smart Outlet Plug with a smartphone App, and plugged my night stand light into it. The switch on the light has always to stay ON!. I have to use the App to turn on and off the light. I set the wake-up time on the app and since then it always woke me up, no matter what. Once awake, I turn off the light on the App.
Since you live in NZ, you may want to look for instance into the local Amazon website under Smart Outlet Plug. It must have WiFi connectivity and allows you to set several On-Off times, and on which days (every day, specific weekdays etc). Also, one that has the largest amount of reviews, over 60% positive! It has to have a memory to retain the time settings in case there is a temporary power outtage (important when living in Texas!). If there is no power at wake-up time, I can only rely on hearing the iPhone alarms, or I am out of luck.
By the way: I have qualified for cochlear implant. Since the processor has to be taken off while sleeping, I will be totally deaf on one side while asleep. So, my Smart Outlet Plug will continue to be my “reliable alarm clock”.
