Working to get movie theater and concert hall to add captions or listening devices

It’s so frustrating!! I’m 13 and hard of hearing. It’s genetic in my family and I’ve lived with it my whole life. To this day the theaters near me only have one option for subtitles: a bulky thing you have to hold that has captions and blocks out the rest of the theater… They don’t let you connect anything either as they “fear it will mess with the sound system” I’m so frustrated with the whole ordeal!!!

Hi chloe_Jean, Do you live in the U.S.? Theaters are required to supply open captions for at least one show if they have a certain number of showings of the same movie. In Michigan, the Senate is considering a bill requiring theaters to include more screenings of open captions on the screen. I really sympathize with what you are going through since I love going to see movies at the theater and can’t understand most of it unless there is open captions. Some of the major theaters like AMC and MJR have certain days of the week where there is one showing with open captions. I went to one this summer and it was wonderful not to have to strain to catch a word or two. You are only 13 and have a long time ahead of you. It may take awhile but you could contact your state representative or senator and tell them what you are going through and ask them to make it a law that more open caption films are shown. It is easier on the state level than the national level. (If you are in United States).

I do! Illinois…. So looking forward to move to Texas, besides the point yes they provide something to look into that cob=vers the rest of the movie where you just look into it and read… it takes away every point f going to the movies when they DO have the tech too. Also i’ve tried for the past two years, got brushed off. me and my parents both as they didn’t care very much.

For me closed captioning are a non starter as I am dyslexic and also lately I find the text never stays long enough on the screen for me to read. Dyslexia affects approximately 20% of the population. I use from my TV and love it.
