I’m after hearing aid recommendations. I’m based in Syd, Australia.
I’m currently trialing Jabra 20 and I’m having issues with the speech recognition. I previously trialed Rexton and they were great, but I decided to test BTE because they are supposed to be more powerful.
I’m a candidate for but I prefer not to go down this path.
With your relatively flat hearing loss in the right ear most hearing aids should help you. Since you tried the Rexton in the ear and liked it that sounds like a good plan. You don’t need a SP or UP type aid for that right ear. The Jabra you are trying is a aid, not a BTE aid.
Hearing aid terminology is confusing. There are two types of hearing aids that are worn Behind the Ear () There is a typically larger type with all the hardware in the hearing aid and a tube that goes in the ear. The typically smaller type has the speaker (called a receiver) in the ear connected to the aids by a wire. Although both styles are technically BTE, we tend to call the ones with the Receiver In the Ear . Your Jabras are RICs. I’m not sure what you are referring to by .
Regarding why your hearing aids aren’t helping with speech recognition. Nothing shy of a cochlear implant is going to help your left ear with speech recognition. Regarding the right ear it would be good to know your Word Recognition Scores (They’re just to the right on the form you posted) If your scores are low it can be very difficult to regain speech recognition. Basically if the brain is deprived of hearing sounds it loses the ability to make sense of them
I’ve been using Costco as my main provider, but my audiologist and I have agreed that Costco might not be able to give me what I need. I recently went to another provider and they did a hearing test (see below). According to this test, I have 0 recognition on the left and 60% on the right. I saw my Costco audiologist yesterday (they’ve been wonderful btw) and we don’t agree with the results, because I can hear very very faintly on the left but I’ve noticed that I has dropped since last time.
Costco haven’t done a speech test for a while so I don’t have those results
I don’t think the Jabra Are for me or they haven’t been configured properly. The Costco audiologist (She confirmed that she is an audiologist) has been asking the Jabra rep for more tips, but they both agree that these Jabra ones might not be what I need.
For additional context, I have an undiagnosed illness which is currently under investigation. Its causing inflamation in my brain which is pushing down on some sensory nerves which has caused my hearing loss.
Edit: Furthermore, there are 2 types of Jabra sold at Costco, the one you mentioned ( which I’ve tried in the past and they were clear) and the one that was sold to me as a (I have attached a photo) which I’m having trouble with.

But this might be a problem. If there is pressure on the auditory nerve that could be expected to cause a lot of speech distortion that a hearing aid couldn’t overcome. However, that left ear loss appears to have a huge conductive overlay. There are no surgical correction options available for that? I suppose not while your brain is inflammed. I wouldn’t do a until that was resolved either.
You aren’t planning to put a hearing aid in the left ear? If you don’t need something compatible with a left ear UP BTE, then you could probably go back to the that you liked.

My hasn’t mentioned a surgical correction. He has pushed back on the for now, maybe because of the inflamation (he hasn’t said) and because I refuse to get one.
I sound like I’m in an echo chamber, the Costco audiologist hasn’t figured out why.
I want to keep something in the left ear because I don’t want to lose it altogether. There is some sound, like a very soft whisper.
I’ve been told that patients with unaidable mixed losses actually do quite well in . But no, not while your brain is inflammed. That has to be resolved first.
Do you sound like you are in an echo chamber with the hearing aid in the ear but turned off? Do you sound like you are an echo chamber when you, say, listen to music over headphones (no hearing aid)? Is the echo chamber effect on other’s voices or just your voice? It in on vowel sounds or consonent sounds?
The weirdest thing just happened. I decided to take 50mg of prednisolone these last 2 days, and I can hear much better without that echo chamber effecg. It looks like the inflammation decreased slightly.
I only noticed the echo chamber effect when I had the on.
