Hi everyone,
My son recently started using a Phonak Sky L PR in one ear. That ear still has a small hole in the eardrum after the grommet came out and the eardrum hasn’t closed yet.
A few days ago, we noticed otorrhea coming from that ear, which went up through the earmold and tubing, and even reached the earhook (though it didn’t seem to reach the damper).
At first, I disconnected the earmold and tube and rinsed them with water to remove the fluid. I did the same with the earhook—only later did I realize that washing the earhook isn’t recommended because the damper/acoustic filter can be damaged.
When I mentioned this at our audiology appointment and asked about replacing both the tube and the earhook, the audiologist said she would replace the tube but that the earhook didn’t need to be changed. Instead, she cleaned the earhook with what I think was alcohol, used a drying spray, and then put it in a UV drying box to finish the disinfection.
However, I’ve read in several places that since earhooks are inexpensive, it’s often considered best practice to simply replace a contaminated earhook rather than trying to clean it.
Since we’re still very new to this world, I’d really appreciate hearing your opinions and advice about this.
Thanks in advance!
