Car noise overwhelms Sennheiser Sonite aids

I have a new pair of Sennheiser Sonite aids from Costco. They have one problem that I need to understand before going back for my first post-fitting appointment. When I am driving my Audi A4 sedan my hearing aids amplify the road noise and the sound made by the fan for heating and air conditioning in the dashboard. The amplified sound is overwhelming and distracting and I have to turn off the aids to drive. The aids also control my iPhone for telephone calls and streaming music.

I have no idea what frequency the offending car noise that is being mishandled by the aids is at - and I’m not sure how I can mimic the problem in my Costco audiologist’s office. Has anyone else had this problems- and found a cure???

I started this list of features that appear to be identical between the Costco Sonite R and the Phonak Audeo L. For branding reasons (I guess) the features and programs are called by different names. I found it very confusing but I hope this helps. Noise reduction can be regulated in smartphone app. However, your Audi can set the default towards more noise reduction in Car program.

Is your hearing aid connected to your phone or other device via Bluetooth? You might be in the Program called “Bluetooth + Mic” where the Hearing Aid microphone is what you are hearing. There is a slider in the APP that will mix “ambient” microphone into the Bluetooth signal that you can use to turn the mic off.

If that is the case, if you are streaming anything, in fact, you can reduce the amount of mic volume mixed in by pressing the front button on the aids. (Assuming the hasn’t changed the default settings for button assignments). The front button can be pressed multiple times to change the mix more for stream volume and less mic. Up to a maximum amount. In the app you can do it visually, and even hit the mic mute button.

My Audi at Costco installed a program called “Car Noise” in my Sonite aids and did a few adjustments. The car noise is now gone and I can still hear what I need to hear ….
