Hello all. I was diagnosed with Auditory Processing Disorder when I was a child, and recently was diagnosed with Autism (Level 1). I’m a 40-year-old female. I had a hearing test yesterday to reconfirm , but it turns out I don’t have APD, but instead have mild in my left ear. 40 DB is the most loss in that ear. Right ear is pretty normal, maybe some mild loss, but not cookie-bite like the left ear. I was told that either the APD diagnosis as a child was a misdiagnosis and it was really a processing issue in general (the ASD), or that I outgrew the APD.
I probably have had SNHL for quite some time, as the biggest struggles are when the room is noisy and I have no idea what other people are saying (lots of smiling and nodding instead of exasperating them with, “Sorry, what? What did you say? Can you repeat that? Can you repeat that again?”
I was told that hearing aids may help, and recommended to try it in both ears (audiologist said some people don’t like having a hearing aid only in one ear).
I was going to go to Costco (I’m in Canada), and their hearing aids are $2200, and my student insurance doesn’t cover them or anything hearing-related. I am finding out that this is quite common for insurance companies not to cover hearing loss, which I find… absurd.
Anyways, my Father-in-law offered me his old “Costco brand” hearing aids (I am waiting to hear back from him with what the exact model # is), but I assume they are Kirkland. He is no longer using them because he inherited his dad’s $5000 hearing aids.
I called Costco back (I made an appointment with them), and asked about them reprogramming used hearing aids that belonged to my Father-in-law (and told them that they were Costco brand). I was told that there is a $500 “refitting fee”. Being the techie that I am, I became determined to reprogram them myself, and see that lots of people have also done the same.
But I have also been reading that programming for cookie-bite hearing loss can be quite challenging, because I’m not doing general amplification, but am amplifying only certain frequencies (mid-frequencies). I do have the report.
Can someone outline what re-programming looks like, so I have an idea of what to expect? Is there a good video that I can watch? Has anyone here successfully re-programmed for cookie-bite hearing loss? I read that I will likely need the Noahlink Wireless, and will have to find a program here on the forum for the specific model.
My plan is to go with Costco for now (new), so that I can try them out, decide what works for me, and then return them and attempt to program my own, having a baseline of what to expect for “successful hearing”, if that makes sense.
