What I consider distortion in Philips hearing aids

My hearing loss is mild in the lower frequencies and quite mad in the 2k range and up.

In mid November I got Phillips hearing aids from Costco. I get what I would call distortion or over drive with some voices and sounds. Worst voices are females with what I would call a strident or forward voice. Sound kind of smears. Aids actually make these voices worse. If I knock down the mid and high frequencies, it helps but doesn’t cure. Worse in person in noisy place, but it’s a problem even on TV.

Brought the problem up with the gal at Costco, but got little help

When I put my audio gram in my Apple airpods, the results are much better. Still some unnatural sound, but not near as much.

Where do I go from here?

No. Only through aids. Sound quality is poor enough that I don’t use them for streaming.

I would go an voice generated website, download a frequency analyzer like Spectroid for your phone, and find the frequencies and loudness levels that are causing you issues.

That will give your hearing aid fitter something to work with.

If your local Costco doesn’t want to work with you, then try another Costco if there is another one within driving distance from your location. Not all Costco fitters are of equal ability.

Your other option is to go to the section here at this website and ask for the programming software and then buy a hearing aid programmer. The folks at the DIY section can help you with all of that.

Yesterday I redid the hearing test results in my Airpods. Went back and forth between them and the . No contest in sound quality. With the aids, everything sound tinny. Walking or driving on gravel sounds more like crinkling tin foil or a can of rocks being rattled. Sounds like gravel with the AirPods.

Other thing with the aids is streaming. Sound quality is poor, but worse yet is they lose connection and sound like a cell call breaking up. Got a phone call and could barely understand or be understood.

I could live with no streaming, but the fact that they make understanding some people worse means they will likely go back. My question now is, if I spend 3-4 times as much, will the results be better?
