Skiing with hearing loss

I’m going skiing for the first time. Last time I went skiing I had hair on my head, full hearing and no one really wore helmets. Now I’m old(er), have no hair, have moderate hearing loss and everyone wears ski helmets.

I already struggle in the winter being able to hear everyone with a hat on my head when it covers my ’s. So what should I do when I have an skimask and helmet on? I was thinking a little bit about getting a remote mic but that’s a bunch of money and I’d be afraid of it coming off. I also thought about whipping out my iphone and turning on live listen, but that would be a little hard to do with ski gloves on.

I guess just tell the people I’m with to talk really loud?

Fabrics mask/filter some of the middle and much of the high frequencies. Try to make manual program in the smartphone. 2 stepsmore to the mids and maximum for the highest frequencies. Which domes do you have? You may require more closed one.

Perhaps with hat over active kicks on and the make listening harder?

Also, apart from domes, which receivers do you have? Have you ever had measured (Loudness Discomfort Levels) - it is necessary to accurately set proper ?

I’ve not had problems skiing with my hearing aids and a helmet which is the only thing that covers my ears. I seem to hear other skiers warnings as to on your left or on your right and I can even converse with my husband. My hearing loss is just short of profound these days now that I’m about to turn 80. And yes we are still skiing.

You might also get a whistling feedback when wearing the helmet? I know I do if I wear a helmet, hopefully this doesn’t apply to you.

Thanks for this. When I wear a winter hat that has insulation, it’s not like I can’t hear people, it’s just muffled enough that I start missing words. I’m thinking I’ll either get a generic mic for my wife to wear or just not worry about it and deal with it when I’m there.
