GN’s parent company, GN Store Nord, agreed to sell its hearing aid business (including ReSound and Beltone) to the global retailer Amplifon to create a vertically integrated powerhouse. The $2.6 billion deal allows GN to cash in, gain a roughly 16% ownership stake in the newly combined giant, and pivot its focus to its enterprise and consumer audio/video peripherals businesses.
The strategic drivers behind the sale include:
-
Vertical Integration: The merger unites GN’s R&D and manufacturing capabilities with Amplifon’s massive global retail footprint. This allows the companies to reduce costs through volume insourcing and streamlined supply chains.
-
Financial Value: Valued at approximately DKK 17.0 billion (~$2.6 billion), the transaction provides GN with ~$1.8 billion in cash and 56 million Amplifon shares, making GN a significant long-term partner in the newly expanded audiology group.
-
Corporate Focus: By divesting the hearing division, GN Store Nord can double down on its fast-growing enterprise communications and audio/video markets (such as Jabra).
An global retailer like Amplifon has no experience as hearing aid manufacturer and Resound Nord isn’t going to focus on new Resound aids. I’m not going to buy new Resound Enzo IA aids and will stick with Phonak.
