Phonak Hearing Aid with Roger

Hi, I use the Roger to watch TV but have a hard time adjusting the volume to a comfortable level while maintaining clarity. I use the base settings as well as the app but get a lot of shussing on sh, s and ch words. So annoying! Audiologist made an adjustment that didn’t help. All the sound is loud. I have the cros due to one sided hearing and a mostly closed molded earpiece. Any ideas? Thanks!

IIRC, @RobHooft has much experience with TV streaming, but I’m not sure if his preamplifier has option to be a simple equaliser.

How long you use your hearing in your life?

If you are new, inexperienced hearing aid user, I would recommend to getting used to that, because high frequency amplification is essential for better clarity and speech understanding, especially in noise. Your brain porbably have not received properly amplified high frequencies for so long time, so that you feel new amplification is unnatural.

Thanks for the reply. I’ve worn for over 10 yrs and these for over 2. Interestingly if I listen thru regular earbuds the volume has to be high but it sounds more normal. Problem is no one else can hear unless wearing earbuds too.

Regular earbuds has dynamic driver instead of balanced armature in receivers. Dynamic drivers are better for lower frequencies, but not necessarily for mids and highs, essential for speech understanding.

I think still there should be at least few weeks trial with that fitting. You can always create an additional program with less amplification for highs in smartphone app.

I was surprised when I was using a Roger on 3 with my new Phonak sphere hearing aids. As I have done in the past with previous Phonak aids and brought the Roger on tool and when I turned it on in a restaurant I noticed that my Phonak sphere switched from its iPhone app on restaurant to what it shows as mic. Using my Phonak on the restaurant noise was as loud as it had in the past. I switched the Roger on off and only used my Phonak app set to restaurant and there was a real change lowering the noise and raising clearer hearing. I checked with my audiologist who confirmed that my observation is correct. In the future I’ll leave my Phonak on home.

I am curious how the sphere in noise functions while using the Roger mic. Guessing the roger+mic will not use sphere in noise. Losing the fancy chip advantage.

Thanks to all. Have to get a copy of the last test. As for the Roger in restaurants I’ve had the same experience which is sad cuz it worked so well. I too fool around with the options and usually end using Live Transcribe to supplement. It’s a good app (not perfect) as it uses the phone mic so doesn’t drain the battery. One issue with the TV and Roger is it’s limited to ambient and volume only adjustment unlike the that has a wider range of choices.

How do I attach the ? It’s weird because if I’m streaming TV or music I have to turn the ambient off and volume up tho that doesn’t solve the “s” distortion. If I’m watching regular TV I have to turn the volume way down. And on the treadmill turning off the ambient doesn’t reduce the motor sound that much. Am I crazy?!
