Apps for brain training/speech recognition

@Deaf_piper put out a big list of training apps for speech and music some time ago. She reposts it now and then.

I have heard Lace is a good app but very expensive unless you can get it free from your audiologist/fitter.

Pending on how you personally learn plays a huge part on how you train to improve your speech comprehension. Not everyone is likes to read.

Listening to audiobooks can also be really useful auditory training, but can get expensive. Apple provides transcripts of podcasts syndicated through its platform which can make ti a cheaper method of training if you use free podcasts and you can check that you’ve understood correctly by referring back to the transcript.

@Hearing_Potential Audiobooks through your local library are free. You join to get electronic membership you get the app they use and it’s all free.

Spotify also has free version audiobooks, podcasts and music all from the free version.

Some podcasts in the Spotify have also transcripts. For free. Some YouTube videos also.

Yes, Spotify free version has 1 minute of advertising every 30 minutes. When I was doing CI rehab, I found that minute useful ( not the add though) In the early months a break every 30 minutes gave me a much needed time away from level of concentration required deciphering what was being said.

Well, this is timely. I’ve recently been putting the final touches on a new option in this space called SoundSteps. It’s built around pretty much what you described @Dogday: straight speech practice, not a game, and it keeps stepping up as you improve instead of running out of exercises. Words that sound alike, then sentences and full conversations, with background noise you can bring in when you’re ready for it. There’s 10 different English voices to choose from at the moment, each with a pretty deep pool of audio.

It’s on the web now at soundsteps.app17 and totally free to try. The listening check at the start takes about 2 minutes, no account needed. Mobile apps are close behind.

I’m looking for people to take it for a spin, and would love to hear what you think is helpful, what’s rough, if you get lost, etc. Feedback is a gift and will help me shape this into what I hope to be a helpful resource.

Bring back the beat is no longer available in Aus. I don’t know about the rest of the world though.
