Oticon New Product: Oticon Reveal

Thanks for posting the "first person" impressions and the comparison with Intent. I'm torn between the Reveal and the new Phonak EON. I had tried the Intent but returned it because there were times when other conversations at a restaurant were too loud for the conversation I wanted to have across the table to easily stand out and because there were times when I'd be walking through the neighborhood and the Intents would, by default, focus ahead of me and I couldn't hear cars approaching from the rear until they were almost right near my shoulder. Please add more comparisons and comments as you go along.

Thanks for sharing this. There was a fair amount of useful information in this video. Oticon's Wind and Handling Noise stabiliser should perform in a manner that is similar to Phonak's new offering. I don't think that the feedback manager demonstration was that useful as they should've re-run the feedback calibration of the competitor device when they changed the coupling to a more occluded fit to optimise the amount of gain available. It was interesting to see that they only had their feedback manager running in 16 channels in Intent and earlier products and that it's now in 48 channels, at least for Reveal 1.

Even though most probably don't see it this way. I see Reveal as being a significant step change above Intent, at least in terms of how the brain can use the signal being provided. I'd love to see their studies replicated in a paediatric population.

After a couple more days with the Reveal 1s, one significant change for me is noise in the car. Now with the Reveals the road noise in the car is much less pronounced and voices are better defined. In past i had to try to turn my head to look at the person speaking (not a good thing). In the couple of trips that I took since Monday, voices (and even GPS directions) are easier to understand. I have not done highway speed yet, which was particularly bad, and hope that is helped too.

I did verify when got fitted that in the AI Clarifier I am at the default which is the “Balanced” for “Easy situations” and “Wide” setting for “Difficult situations”.

I just completed my training on the Reveal product. It was very technical and quite intense. I have a long list of questions. From what I understand thus far, Signia is doing a lot more with their real-time conversation enhancement than Oticon can in terms of null-steering/ beamforming.

Their additional gain provided by the feedback management is dependent upon faster phase cancellation in more channels (64 up from 16) and spectrotemporal warping of the output signal to break feedback loops which can result in a sound quality which may be unpleasant to those who can hear it.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like the biggest benefit is improved voice clarity, while most other features remain similar to the Intents. Definitely useful feedback for anyone considering the upgrade.

It was nice to see the Oticon representatives being interviewed talking about updating their superpower device with the technology in Reveal.

Interesting new data: HearAdvisor has now tested both Reveal 1 and EON Sphere under its standardized lab protocol. In the tuned fittings, Reveal scored 4.8 vs EON 4.3 for speech in quiet, but EON scored 4.5 vs Reveal 3.3 for speech in noise. Reveal did better on feedback (5.0 vs 4.6), while EON did better on own voice (2.8 vs 1.9). Obviously these are standardized lab fittings rather than individual real-world results, but the speech-in-noise difference caught my attention.

For my part, after some recent fine-tuning of my EONs and AutoSense, I’m now very satisfied in calm, noise, and loud-noise situations. Last night in a bedroom with loud fans I could hear my wife clearly. My own voice is slightly sharp, but actually useful because I can judge and moderate how loudly I’m speaking. At this point I’m no longer considering Reveal.

Looking at acoustic measures alone, Oticon Reveal is a tiny performance improvement relative to Intent in every area. But these are acoustic measures and don't tell us anything about what is happening in the brain. That is the limiting factor of tests that don't measure speech understanding using real people. The Reveal product is automatically at a disadvantage to more products with more aggressive speech in noise management like the Fortel devices because of this bias.

@stevetaddei @AbramBaileyAuD I'd really like hearadvisor to consider factoring in sound quality preferences into the sound comparison tool rather than speech in noise ease of understanding alone, as the research tells us that people refuse to continue using hearing aids consistently if they don't like the quality of the sound provided. Consistent device usage is a more important determiner of hearing aid success than speech in noise performance alone.

PS: It was really interesting that the Oticon Reveal was tested using NAL-NL2. Is Oticon not recommending VAC+ for an N3 audiogram anymore?
