Is this different from “mute” vs normal/tracking/etc. ??

If so, is there a button when reading the topic or only when in the list of topics mode?

Same idea as mute yes. If you click this, it will mute the topic and remove it from following/catch up (unless you unmute it later)...

I'm about to add swipe to clear/mute too for mobile users.

You may need to refresh to see this, but swipe right will now clear/mark read in Catch Up and Following. Swipe left will mute the topic.

I get it. I may be showing my age, but I'm not a fan of hidden UI behaviors. The user doesn't know it's there (unless they read this thread) until they accidentally invoke it and don't know what the heck just happened. I'm probably in the minority.

Edit: as long as the big buttons to the right remain, I'll drop my request, and I'll let you know the first time I make a mistake. 😀

Good point though. I'll add one of those little animation hints the first time a user hits that view.
