I was in the audience of a panel discussion where the panelists were flanked by a pair of big audience-facing screens showing a rotating slideshow from a laptop (not synced to the discussion), with lots of screen real estate potentially available for captions. Each panelist had a microphone connected to the house sound system, and audience members who wanted to ask questions were handed a microphone by a roving staffer.
So, it seems like it might be possible to generate live captions with just a cable from sound system output to an input on the laptop, and captioning software. Does anyone know of such a solution?
