Hearing aid advise

Hi everyone

I’m 57 and use Phonak Infinio Sphere Ultra I90s and Philips 9050s. Years of ear infections and surgeries have left me with a lot of scar tissue, no right eardrum, and a possible hole in my left eardrum.

My biggest problem is hearing people in noisy public places. The Phonaks cut background noise better, but they sound sharp and tinny even after adjustments by a very good audiologist. The Philips sound more natural, but they let in more background noise.

What newer models should I try? I’m especially interested in the latest Signia models and whether newer Oticons are enough of an improvement over the Philips 9050s to be worth upgrading. ReSound did not work well for me.

I’m also very sensitive to loud sounds and always carry good earplugs. Seem as my hearing prefers a more natural sound.

If you have similar hearing problems or experience with these models, I’d appreciate your recommendations.

How long you're hearing aid user? Tinny sounds (high frequency amplification) are crucial to speech understanding, especially in noise. If you're new user, you should at least try to get used to it, patience and time is needed. You can also make high frequencies "in between" for ease the adaptation period, but the goal should be to achieve the right, 100% high-frequency gains.

I doubt if newer hearing aids will help. Infinio Sphere and 9050s are great hearing aids.

Depending on conductive part of your hearing loss you may need bone-anchored devices more than "ordinary" hearing aids, bit I have too little information to say that with certainty.

Adding (with bone thresholds) and results will helpin providing more accurate advices.

What domes do you have? If earmold- what diameter of ventsnin mm?

What receiver power do you have?

I have been wearing them for about 7 years, I have always kept to myself and decided after these last few restaurants visits, it was time to say something. I’ve also got a call to my audiologist, but I was just hoping someone could kind of chime in on the sound platform as my old resounds were terrible and I would have to turn the bass all the way up on them and pull all the trouble out in the audiologist would do the same because I have no eardrums, so I have no bass reflex in a sense. That’s why I was wondering about the Signia max because I’ve heard wider brand has a very natural sound processing.

For now, it is too little information from you to give fair advices, it could be hit and miss.

New will not necessarily improves your experience just because they're new, because of not addressing causes.

Before spending much money for new HAs you should be cautious and get more knowledge.

Sharing your would be very helpful. As mentioned more details about the receivers and acoustics, molds/domes.

You mentioned a very good fitter set up your aids and then you had issues with tinny sounds. Maybe that good fitter properly set those aides up and you are hearing sounds you haven't heard in a while. That issue takes time to acclimate.
