Before I retired, I would put on the headphones or some inserts and test a few frequencies in each ear. I knew what my thresholds were so I could verify the audiometer was still working correctly and calibration was OK.

Thank you for your reply. What is needed to accurately determine whether the issue lies with my hearing threshold or the audiometer itself? Do you have hearing loss? Did you operate audiometers before you retired?

To be used professionally, he audiometer needs to be calibrated once a year (by a calibration company) to ensure accuracy. Since I owned a hearing aid practice for over 22 years and worked in the industry for 50 years, yes I did operate audiometers. Yes I do have a high frequency hearing loss but the biological calibration of the equipment is still the same since I don't expect my thresholds to shift much if any at all.

Thank you for your reply, and for letting me know that you used to run a hearing aid shop. In your country, do you also use the "half-gain rule" for adjusting hearing aids?

For a couple of years I've used Sound Meter3 available in Google Android Store. If you have an iPhone I'm sure there is something comparable in the Apple store.
I have no way of calibrating it, however it seems to be accurate enough for my needs, which is measuring background noise of whatever venue I am in. I keep a log in my phone of venue name and background db. I have compared the frequency measuring portion of this app to some online signal generators, and it's accurate.
