Widex Moment app now internet-dependent

I have noticed that since the recent update to the Widex Moment app, the app won't work unless my smartphone has data (i.e. Internet connection) turned on.

Have other Widex Moment users noticed this? The implication is that data is being continuously transmitted to Widex servers.

I had a trial, and noticed the app didn’t have certain functionality when I didn’t have internet/data access.

Wow yeah this is not good, but seems to fit their way of thinking as the software is cloud based programming only, so now the App, another good reason to dislike Widex products, next the will be beaming back to the mother ship!

I tested this and confirmed that the app attempts to connect online during startup. Once it is running, disconnecting the internet does not stop it from functioning.

On an iPhone you can still adjust the aids through built-in iOS features with the internet off.

I rarely use the app because I dislike how long the Widex app takes to launch, and since my aids lack buttons, I have to use my phone for control. Almost everything can be managed using the IOS control panel (mic directionality and assistant are the ones not available the IOS panel).

Maybe Widex wants data on active Moment platform users because many of those will never upgrade to Allure or newer. Possibly this is step one in reversing course. It's still a bad design choice but Widex might be in a bind and could remove this connectivity requirement later.

Thanks for the information that the app will continue connecting to the hearing aids after an initial logon, but the internet link is dropped. It works for me.

Background: I run on a monthly prepay phone plan with a limited amount of data usage so conserving phone data usage is important.

The problem is that, if you don't use the Moment app for a while, it will close. This means you will have to do the connect/reconnect often.

Using the built-in iOS panel is simpler if data use is a worry. With my SmartRICs (Moment), I set up a shortcut so that triple-clicking the side button brings the IOS hearing aid menu onto the screen.

As a frequent international traveler, I'm often without an internet connection, making the app worthless. When I do have internet, the app takes forever to connect, if it does at all.

I emailed Widex regarding this, but don't expect an answer. Just another example of an update that essentially breaks basic functionality.

The app works if cellular data and wifi are off.
One trick (in IOS) is to turn off the cellular data option for the app while roaming.

Thanks for the info.

I received a reply from Widex stating the system is down and no time line for repair. However, this has been an ongoing problem for a few weeks, so I would have thought they could have worked through it by now.

I have the Moment SmartRIC 440 (released 2024) -- these are the best aids I've used. Older tech maybe but works extremely well.

(I've used Infinio -non-Sphere, Signia Active Pro X, Rexton Reach and some old Oticons).

I've read that the Allures are not a significant upgrade.
