I had a good test for the OPNs last night and they failed. Went out to my sisters house (she and her husband have Covid19, he’s in ICU) with my two other sisters, one of their husbands and my wife to give her words of encouragement. We stood about 25 feet away while she sat on the front porch, we were wearing masks. Couldn’t understand anyone and they were talking loud to overcome the distance. I could hear every insect within a 500 yard radius very well. I was very frustrated. When it was so important to hear what was being said, I couldn’t. I wished for the moments (left them with audi) they don’t pull in all the background sound and I’m sure I could have switched to a program that would have been better. I know part of it is my hearing, still getting vibrations in speech, especially when someone is more than 4 feet away. Hoping the moments will be in next week with custom molds.
I’m sure your right. Only my sister on the porch was that far though. Everyone else was standing to my left in a line but they were wearing masks. Open sound lowered the crickets and katydids some but not enough.
You may need to ask your Audi if your noise reduction is set to maximum also you may want to also ask if the transition times are also set to the fastest possible
I had an appointment today with two others wearing masks & background sound. The Evokes automatically go to the best sound class to pick out speech and I could hear most of it without any issues which was pretty amazing under the circumstances. The Moments I am sure will work in a similar way. They are very clever at adapting to the environment and picking out speech (I have Custom 440 model).
Went to bed late last night and didn’t realize the aids didn’t light up went I dropped them in the charger. Went I put them on this morning I didn’t hear the startup tune. I checked the battery power and they were at 9%. I had plugged my phone charger into the usb that’s made into my night stand and accidentally turned the power switch off to the power outlets built into the table. Lesson learned. Totally my fault but something that I can see happening again.
The good thing is after a couple hours in the plugged in charger their at 100%
Yeah, the good thing is that even a 15 minute charge can probably give you several hours of use until you have time to charge it some more. But if you have to leave the house right away and stay out all day (say for work) then that can be a problem.
Had another good test for the OPN’s and they performed much better this time. I can’t imagine hearing aids handling wind noise better than the OPN’s. My wife rented a cabin on the lake and a pontoon boat for the weekend for my 60th birthday with the kids and grandkids. On the boat if I turned the aids volume down a couple clicks the wind noise wasn’t bad at all and I could still understand someone speaking, over the motor noise and music playing, mainly because they would be talking louder than normal. If I was setting in a seat facing the back of the boat with my back to the wind I had to turn them down 4 or 5 clicks and couldn’t hear much of anything but maybe the roar of the motor. I left them on while floating in the water with only one incident. My 4 year old grandson pulled my hat off that had a pull string hanging down and the string caught on the and pulled the aid off my ear. Luckily the tulip dome stayed in place so no harm done.
Overall I was satisfied with the OPN’s over the weekend. I’m looking forward to getting the moments back next week to see how well they perform after wearing the OPN’s for almost 3 weeks.
Tim, I went boating today w/ Widex Moments that I’m trialing. No Wind noise. And I didn’t change volume. I could hear ok. Not great.
I don’t hear great w/ these . Speech isn’t clear. In my house when a friend was on the sofa and I was in my recliner - maybe 6 feet away facing each other, I could not make out what she was saying. I had to move to the sofa and it was better - not great. FWIW
The only time I couldn’t hear clearly with my Evokes, something was missing from the set up. Do you have custom moulds, they give the clearest speech. Check that the mould/hearing aid type has been selected in the screen, this makes the gain correct alongside the sensogram and vent calculations. If the moulds are custom, the hearing aid type selected in the settings, the vent is correctly selected, feedback & sensogram run then maybe try the comfort versus intelligibility settings. This can be set up as an additional programme, so programme 2 a copy of one with one step towards comfort, and programme 3 a copy of one with one step towards intelligibility. Then you have a no pressure way to try some slightly different options. That’s how it works for the Evokes anyway.
I haven’t been boating with the moments but I have been in an open top jeep and the wind noise is louder than the OPN’s. Which is kinda surprising because of the open design of the OPN’s. Setup and tuning could have a lot to do with I’m sure.
You can use the evoke app in situation’s like this, make changes within the app to see what works better, you can adjust the equaliser in the sound menu, including the volume.
So the speech clarity hasn’t improved any for you? I thought maybe after a week or so it might improve a little. Like tenkan suggested, does tweaking EQ in the app help any?
Something’s not right then, because it should make a considerable difference, especially between the highs and lows, could be time to pop back into the clinic and have your audiologist make a few additional adjustments.
Also you might want to try the music mode. Until my audi got the aids tuned in better I had to use music mode for clearer speech understanding in quiet situations.
I am trialing oticon opns and only a few days but I must get settings changed as the wind sounds like a hurricane and I am hearing so many distant voices I dont need to hear.
I believe the audio needs to tweak, but I cannot see her for a week.
I had oticon agil pro,for past 8 years and loved them;and thought this would be a step up.
(as one of old ones not fully functioning).
I did trial Phonak Audeo M 90 and was ok,and i had them tweaked a few times, but I wanted to try OticonopnS minrite
so I am just a few days into trial .
wind is so so very very loud!!

After thinking about your great experience several times I think I know why is that - your loss looks almost like horizontal line, and in that case, it’s expected that hearing aids will work great. However you’d also probably have great results with strong enough headphones.
Why I’m writing this? Because with non flat losses, acoustic properties of an ear canal, sound, vents, environment and type of loss insanely affect the outcome, both in sounds that come through and capability of our brain to extract the most out of it. And since you didn’t that knowledge you probably aren’t aware how much some little change can mess up things completely.
It would be great that we all could have your experience. Unfortunately the reality is different. So, in any case harder than yours (sloping, cookie bite), fitting becomes more complex and many times, there is no help.
Eg if you have cochlear dead region, no matter how loud you send, it will stay dead, but loudness will impact the neighbour frequencies, neighbours in cochlea not on the , and that will impact comprehension. And no matter which person tries, it will be a mess of a fitting in that case. This is just one example of complicated fittings. And many people don’t know much more than audiogram about their loss, and audiogram doesn’t tell everything.
Another example is mine, everyone, and I mean everyone who sees my audiogram has first thought ‘closed mold/or tinny vent and increase lows’. I even tried that. Results were completely unusable, I heard better without HA then with it.
Digging more about what exactly could be the reason for such audiogram, and about ideas how to get the best out of it, I ended with completely different prescription formula, killed lows completely, and having .
So, no matter what adjustments in sw itself was made, based on manufacturer formula, or standard fitting formula, all was useless. You just can’t help me if you stick to defaults and sw alone.
But to hit right combination I had to really learn a lot about acoustics for my specific case. That’s why now I know how complicated it can be. Yes, my fitter didn’t have a clue, I had to research and understand. But my fitter was happy that I’ve shared that with him and we worked together. Now he’ll have more tools in his toolbox for some future client.
And fitter or audi probably doesn’t have time or patience or motivation to do deep, hundreds of hours deep research for some specific cases, so they rely on past experience, colleagues, clients. The less diversity they had, the less ideas they will have when they get something new.
Just try to keep in mind that probably every fitter would be happy to have you as a client while I’m everyone’s nightmare I mean, in terms of loss type
I agree, many times good solution is to find better fitter, since many of them are sellers and not interested in finding the best outcome you can get, but sometimes problem lies in our brain not the sound it gets but in ability to decipher it because of clashes that happen. And even if something works in quiet, under different environment good results might not even be reproducible because our brain just can’t filter out things and HAs have limits in sound processing.
Sorry you have had difficulties. There are some assumptions here-my set up comes after many appointments over the years where dispensers forgot critical elements of the set up, even if it was just the vent it really affects speech comprehension. With many years of experience I have learnt with the right person and set up it can take a handful of appointments and with the wrong one, too many to count but I always persisted because I knew it could be better. My only wish after all these experiences is that I may be able to provide some pointers for those having difficulties, and I think that is what drives most of us.
