Rexton in-canal hearing aid

Hi all
I really struggle to describe the problem to my audi, can you help please?
I am using an in-canal (Rexton). When I first used it, it was perfect. Now I cannot clearly hear anymore. It seems like all I hear are cracked voices of people I am talking with - their voices are not clear. I tried listening to the “crackling” sound to determine if it is that sound that I described as “cracked” - it seems not the same. The “crackling” noise sounds like new noise not voices of people. What I described as “cracked” are cracked voices of people that I cannot sometimes understand.

Do you hear “cracked” voices? How did your audi addressed it?

Could be a number of things @arnags2000, you don’t say how long you have had these aids? Receivers could be faulty, or indeed the pickup mic’s, but it does sound like a hardware issue, if you were recently hearing okay with your Rexton aids…. I assume that wax isn’t the problem, which you have no doubt checked? Crackling sounds different, to distortion, has your rechecked/retested your hearing, to eliminate your hearing hasn’t dropped? If it is truly “crackling” (like the sound of crispy paper being crumpled up) it’s likely a hardware prob as Kev speculates. I had the SAME issue decades ago with a pair of Starkey aids. I don’t recall if it was a mic or receiver issue, but I think the chip set in the aids was replaced and it DID go away.

In fact, not only did voices “crackle” as you describe, but as I’d shift my car’s gears (1,2,3 4) that would vibrate in the aids, too, so another sign that something - almost like a fragile diaphragm of some sort? was just vibrating.

I think your audi should have NO trouble diagnosing this issue if s/he sends the aids in for repair. But, again as Kev asked: how OLD are these? Cuz they may no longer be under warranty.

Any decent , or dispenser, will be able to diagnose fairly quickly, any potential problems, through their wealth of knowledge, and basically their client base, they will have had most problems with failures, especially if their client base is a fairly large one…. I am rather sceptical your AuD didn’t know what you were trying to convey, with regards to crackling, and may or may not have been deliberately obtuse? Receiver problems are a fairly common, yours may be failing or on there way out, personally I have had receivers fail, twice in under 2 years, with the same aid, if your warranty is out, or if money is an issue, then Costco, if you have one nearby, may be a viable alternative? Good luck getting to the bottom of the crackling cause! Many aids come with 3-yr warranty, too, so if you’ve saved the booklet that came with yours, DO check it.

I get a clear mechanical ‘crackling’ sound in my when the batteries are getting low but not yet dead, so maybe it’s a battery connection issue? The other thought, if it’s not a mechanical ‘crackling’, is that speech hearing (what your brain is decrypting from the input available) is just sporadic. I find that too in some occasions, and environmental factors (like noise) can play a role. Good luck.
