KS10 and high frequency hearing loss

Quick question folks. On Dr. Cliff’s review he mentions that if you have high frequency the KS10 isn’t the best hearing it out there for you, unless you have , which I don’t want because my mid to low is very good. Can anyone else verify this? Has anyone with high frequency HL had a good experience? Bad experience? Thank you in advance.

I think the issue is that with open domes, the KS10’s feedback manager will limit high frequency gain. However, your high frequency loss isn’t that bad as far as high frequency losses go. Other than the 8K loss in your left ear, it’s pretty moderate and I’m pretty sure there’s no hearing aid that would get you audibility there with anything short of a closed custom mold. The only way you’re going to know is to try them. Couple of opinions: With your loss, benefits noticed with hearing aids are likely to be subtle and new loud sounds are likely to be pretty pronounced. I’m a fan of Phonak and the KS9 and KS10, but I suspect you might be happier with Costco’s Phillips hearing aid taking into account your “Musician” screen name.

Another “musician” (French horn and singing) here. Why do you recommend the Philips? I am trying the Philips 9030 and am having issues. My reverse cookie bite loss is hard to fit, I know. However, the way it was fitted makes music impossible. I have -ed it to make it better.
An issue is that for my low frequency loss is that I have molds so that my own voice is very loud and drowns out the other singers when I sing. I have found that lowering the highs in the music program, particularly the 3 kHz singer’s formant reduces the sound of my voice. We’ll see at rehearsal. However that means that I have to manually switch to the speech program to hear the conductor’s directions. This takes too long to switch with the slow ding-donging and is impractical.
While the KS10 is probably of lower quality. I am wondering if its automatic switching would solve my problem.
A fellow choir member has Phonak aids and a mold and he doesn’t have my problem.

A couple of things, @MDB.

  1. Firstly, I want to tell you how grateful I am for your advice and guidance. You show care and concern for total strangers. I honor that.

  2. This thing is very new to me. As you may recall, I returned the trial More1s last week in anticipation of trying a more cost effective option, Costco. So, last night as Mrs and I were watching Episode 4 of “Lonesome Dover”, I had my AirPod Pros set on HA mode, and I heard birds that I could hear when I took them out. Especially on that Left side.

You’re very gracious. My suggestion of the Phillips is likely more based on a gestalt, rather than specifics and it’s just impressions rather than actually experience. 1)I’ve heard multiple Costco staff recommend the Phillips both on the forum and my personal experience (although I haven’t tried them. To me this means they have had good success with this aid. By success I mean fewer returns and less repair issues. 2) When I think of Phillips I think of a sound quality that most people seem to prefer, especially new users. 3) In general, I’ve I’ve heard positive things about Phillips from people for who music is important. Note: There are obvious exceptions as menitoned above. That user has a very different loss thn you though. 4) I think any of the Costco (Receiver in Canal) aids could be fine for you and if cost is a critical factor, by all means try the KS10

Thank you @MDB About a week and a half I spoke to a Costco person on the telephone who said the same thing about Phillips. I am hoping that there are similarities between the here link and the more series. They were aspects of the more that I liked. I like being able to hear everything, but maybe I will hear everything because I’m using to very open dorms anyway. Thank you again.

I gave my rationale for the Phillips in response to OP. My intial thoughts for you are perhaps you’d do better with a little more venting in your molds? That’s the typical way to deal with occlusion which you mentioning your voice sound loud brings to mind. I do suspect you’ll need separate speech and music programs to optimize your experience. Nothing wrong with trying the KS10, but I expect the Phillips can be tweaked to suit you. I’d suggest trying to work with another hearing aid fitter.
