I read somewhere here on this forum that Phonak have some quite heavy suppression in the higher frequencies to prevent feedback etc and this can effect the speech clarity
My audiologist told me this. He did everything he could to disable it. I’ve found that “WhistleBlock” is guilty for this too, so I have it as low as I can (6 out of 20… what these numbers mean, is a mystery). If I stand right next to a wall, it’ll start whistling, I set it that when moving away, the whistling stops. If it continues, it’s set too low.
Yeah @deanvowden… I had a feeling you might be on NAL NL2, but my memory isn’t as prestigious as it once was I believe, I have tried most, if not all of the fitting formulas, at some point or other? If you aren’t already, giving a go might provide fruition, sometimes a little tweak here and there, can make the world of difference… Target software isn’t rocket science, any mistakes are easily rectified, you just revert back to any of the previous settings/sessions, each session is dated once it’s saved in session 1, then I can revert back at any point to session 1, it’s a fairly full proof method, and this way you are free to experiment, as you will make mistakes… In truth, I do not feel the need to experiment anymore, my aids a running at optimum, my A.uD is a keyboard wizard, she makes lightening adjustment’s at the blink of an eye, my first fit, after I asked her to switch on compression, and swap to NAL NL2, this was my last fitting (6 months ago) these aids (Naida Lumity 90 UP ’s) remain totally unaltered since her initial first fit setup, I could tweak them, and get a slight improvement here or there, but if it works, and it works well, then I leave well alone! I am very content, and relaxed, I can say without fear or favour, they are fantastic aids for my needs, the best aids, by a country mile, that I have ever owned, they ain’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but the perfect solution hasn’t been invented yet, I am extremely fortunate… Cheers Kev
You will get there @PeterH you have the tenacity, and wherewithal to make it happen… A dog with a bone, comes to mind it’s a mission! You will eventually get there… I saw a set of Lumity Trials ’s on eBay for £900, only problem was they where rechargeable, but at £900 for the pair, that’s an excellent buy… Cheers Kev
I personally think 80dB across the board based on my experience with the Naida Lumity SP (which is enough - post to follow). Obviously it can be programmed to suit, but I don’t know if there is a danger of being overwhelmed by the sheer power if you don’t need it.
I promised to come back with some further thoughts about the Phonak Lumity Naida SP, so here I am.
I have not yet had a chance to test them out in really noisy conditions, but I have been in the car and to a restaurant with my wife.
But first I would like to say a few things in general. The battery life (size 13 batteries) seems to be 6 to 7 days, depending on the frequency of streaming etc. I was given a set of batteries by Specsavers (premium zinc air), but maybe they don’t last as long as the Rayovac or Duracell batteries I usually use. Still, 6 to 7 days ain’t bad at all. I think they are slightly less hassle than rechargeables, but then I am having to make sure I am carrying around spare packs of batteries.
These aids are powerful, really powerful. I am now totally confused by the designations that Phonak give to their aids - and that includes the industry in general. The Audeo Lumity, with a UP receiver, that can fit 105dB losses is designated for up to profound losses. The Phonak Naida Lumity SP is designated for serious losses. I can tell you now that the Naida Lumity feels to me at least, twice as powerful as the KS 10 rics that I had with the 105dB receivers. I play music through the TV connector with the Naida Lumity’s SP and it blows me away - the intensity, volume, depth, is quite incredible. The KS10s did not match this output - when I tried to program them using target, it went to the max and it was creaking at the seams. For comparison, the gain for the Naidas is 75dB with a 135dB output. I think the rics had a 68dB gain with the UP and maybe 130dB output.
In general, anything with music, especially background music in movies, adverts etc, sounds fantastic. Previously, I would barely hear it. Now I can hear football chanting in the background when watching football. Environmental sounds around the house and outside are much more part of the auditory scene, not necessarily loud, but I am hearing more in comparison to the ric.
In terms of clarity, I probably am not hearing as well. This is an adjustment period with the 2.0 fitting formula. The overall volume of what I am hearing is louder - I am hearing more bass and mids, whereas in comparison, the was definitely crisper. The consequence is that I can put the TV on a much lower volume, but I seem to have lost a bit of comprehension. I may go back and switch to NAL-NL2, but I will give it more time.
The car has given me a bit of a problem with music in that it seems to decide to go into comfort in noise or the calm situation program, but it doesn’t cut out the car noise effectively. So my solution has been one manual press of a button to change program to speech in noise, which works quite well.
In noise, as I mentioned, I went to a really noisy restaurant with my wife. The aid would go into the speech in noise program. What I can gather from that experience is that my wife’s voice comes in well above the noise floor. Whereas the experience I had with the Unitron Vivante and even KS10 before that, was that voices were being swallowed in the noise. This is a big difference. I am unsure if it’s the fitting formula or if that it’s a . Basically, I am getting the volume from the voices and it seems to be saying - OK - let your brain work it out. Obviously there is still some noise, but as I say, my wife’s voice is coming through above it. This was better than the Vivante’s, where voices just disappeared. I had a similar experience in Tesco, where cashiers voices usually disappear. This time around, I can hear not just cashiers, but people talking 3 or 4 meters away - even when I suspect the aids had gone into a comfort in noise program.
All in all, I am scratching my head now and wondering why I ever wore a ric. The fitting range seems to be saying that I was suitable for a UP receiver, but the difference between this BTE SP and the ric UP is night and day - I am hearing so many more environmental sounds with the BTEs.
I have yet to post any experiences of any really noisy and unpredictable environments with multiple people. I have swapped over the receivers to my Roger On iNs, so I am ready, but I need to go out somewhere. Will post again.
Thank you @glucas it seems you are doing very well with the Lumity SP’s… Strangely enough, I regard my Naida Marvel 70 SP’s as my most powerful aids (NHS issue) man those aids are Loud! And yes, IMO, the sound scope of a will always sound richer & fuller than any aids, I am glad you are liking the BTE’s…6 to 7 days is par for the course for 13 batteries glucas, that’s what I get with the Marvel Naida 70 BTE’s, with moderate streaming, I look forward to your on going review and assessment, of your New aids… Cheers Kev
Yeah Peter, I agree with @Zebras, you would be fine, and in close proximity to the fitting range, a set of Naida UP trial aids might be a cheaper option, and you have Target to reactivate them? Cheers Kev
Hearing in noise: I did not have the required satellite channel and could not find an internet stream (illegal anyway) for Arsenal’s champions league game on Wednesday (we were knocked out ) and so I decided to find a local pub. Eventually I end up at one which was well dodgy (do you remember that scene in the 1st Star Wars film when Obi-one-kenobi and Luke Skywalker meet Han Solo in the Inn full of aliens… ?). Anyway, the music was tremendously loud and thumping. I go up to the bar, but unlike my experience around Xmas time with the Vivante, this time I can hear the barman above the cacophony - incredibly. I sit down opposite a big screen and can hear the voices of a group of speakers above the noise floor, but not make them out, which is OK, as they are 3 to 4 meters away. I check the Automatic program, and it is correctly, automatically set to “speech in loud noise”. So this for me is fantastic progress, as I could not make out any voices in this environment with the Vivantes. This is no slur on the Vivantes - I just do not think it was suitable for my loss and/or it was not optimised correctly. I am enjoying the music - but it is too loud (even in the loud noise program) - which I planned to rectify later (see below). Will post further experiences, but need to go out again with friends/family.
Second piece of news, which is fantastic from my point of view, is that I updated Phonak Target, and I was able to connect to my Naida Lumity SPs. Previously I thought that I could not connect because I had bought it from Specsavers and it was locked, but it was not that, I could not connect because it was a new hearing aid and it simply was not in the Target catalogue. Once I connected, I was able to make a few adjustments - decrease the loudness of music using the “Automatic fine tuning” section and also decrease the loudness overall. I also switched to , but I was not happy with the overall shape and loudness of music, so I went back to 2.0.
Hi!I have a problem. I can’t connect my aids with the iPhone XR so that I could listen to e.g. youtube. MyPhonak works, but youtube not. I have Trial aids yet. MyPhonak doesn’t connect either if I want to register as a user. Totally freezes then and needs to be paired again. What is wrong?
Hello @ms.mese on a very rare occasion this can happen, remove/delete the app, forget all your listed Phonak Bluetooth Pairings, switch off you phone, after a minute or so, reboot the iPhone… Redownload the app, and connect the app to your aids… Go to Bluetooth after that, and connect your aids to the iPhone, you may have to switch the aids off, then reboot… Hopefully that will work, and you are good to go… Cheers Kev
