When to upgrade

Hi,
I’m using Phonak Bolero 50, obtained in 2020, since then my hearing went down approx 10%.
My hearing specialist recommends to replace it with 70
Would you upgrade if incremental loss is so small?

My take is that you should upgrade when you can expect the new hearing aids will provide a meaningful improvement over your current hearing aids. if current aids are fine, no need to upgrade.

If you could add your to your profile that would be helpful.
Bolero is quiet old hearing aids, even in 2020.
Your next hearing aids if you can afford it is the new Audeo Sphere Infinio, which should be few light years ahead of bolero.

Are you hearing ok? Getting difficult in noisy places?

Lots of good help here on the forum.

My hearing is poor, I have to be within 4-6 feet from another person, in small group great difficulty. Watching tv with Phonak Compilot II streamer quite enjoyable, talking on phone very good while using Compilot, some difficulty without. Overall good sound quality.
I stated that i have Bolero50 but i am not sure now.

Your loss my not be best with in the ear aids. My thoughts are a behind the ear aids. Power aids.
Hopefully the newer technology aids might help you hear better. The new Phonak Spheres are getting good reviews. They do need to be fit properly to get the best out of them.

Are we talking Bolero B SP? I’m not sure the Bolero M PR would ever have been powerful enough for that right ear unless the ear canals are very small. The Bolero B SP might have been okay on the right if the hearing used to be a bit better, but is weak for it now. And , however, is not going to be more powerful. The Naida SP would be okay. Why the suggestion to change to an ITE? Did you ask to?

Oh, it must be the Bolero B, you said compilot and that was the last compilot generation.

What’s the story of that right ear? Sudden sensorineural loss? Secret conductive loss? Possible candidate? Are you looking at aiding the right ear or not? Different options if you are just fitting the left ear.

I do not know how I lost my right ear. Its been like this for more then 15 years now.
Right now I want to aid only left ear. I never ask why would be better but will do on next visit.
I also consider to replacing Phonak with something from Costco(Canadian) as I see here many satisfied users. Going there for evaluation on Mar 8th, at the moment they offer Jabra, Resound, Rexton and Philips, all with 18 months tryout.
Anyone here having experience using them? Thank you!

Most things can fit that left loss, so it’s really down to your preference. If the bolero is still working well and you are satisfied with its performance, no strong need to upgrade.

Last 9 years i had a in my right ear but now it stopped working and left aid starting to go south ass it gives whistling sounds too often. In future I will aid only left ear, I was never satisfied with CROS.

candidacy for your right ear is probably unlikely but not impossible, so if you have any interest in getting that ear back you could ask to be referred for candidacy assessment by your doctor. I have no idea what criteria are in your area.

Whistling has less to do with the hearing aid and more to do with the fit on the ear or wax build up. It may be that you just need a new mold and new real-ear verification based on your new hearing test and mold. BUT, you also start to get to a point where you wonder how much more money you should invest in an older device.

When you have only one ear, sometimes getting an accessory mic like the Roger On makes more sense than getting a anyway to give you better speech in noise.

Most likely i am candidate but being 82 do not want to take chances ans/or more pains

Ah, yes, that’s reasonable math. Individual from person to person, but also hard to argue with one pretty decent ear. :upside_down_face:
