1st Hearing Aids - Phillips 9050

So I have had these for about 3 days now, I know too early! My initial feelings are, Im not impressed. I have yet to try them in a restaurant scenario, but if my quick test tonight is any example, I cant believe how bad these are for noise cancellation.

So whats your experience? I have had to adjust the program installed at my fitting by using the equalizer by removing all of the mid and high setting! Going for my second visit next week, If things dont get better I cant see keeping these. I will be truely disappointed!

Hearing aids are not suppose to cancel noise generally. They are not noise canceling headphones where you are trying block outside sounds. Hearing aid have a microphone that is suppose pickup outside sound.

So I’m not sure what you are expecting. Maybe you need to think about what you are hearing and what it is that is bothering you.

I guess what you find objectionable, is that the hearing aids are amplifying sounds like fans, dishwashers, and water running from a faucet. That’s what hearing aids are suppose to do.

You have an advantage over normal hearing folks, in that you can take the hearing aids off and live in quieter environment. You give up something for it, but some folks like life in the quiet environment.

Since you’re lower frequencies are not that bad, you are probably getting by right now. But you are starting to miss somethings.

You can always try the Rexton hearing aids. They may be more directional, which may be more to your liking.

You raise a good point. I’ve been wearing ’s since I was a kid. I slept through fire alarms in my university dorms. I’ve joked with friends and family that if there was some miracle cure for hearing loss invented tomorrow, I don’t know how I would handle sleeping.

To the OP’s point, it sounds like there may be some mistaken expectations for what these HA’s will do. The last couple models of HA’s I had (Phonak Brio 4’s and Trax 42’s before them) both had sound processing that suppressed (but not cancelled) sounds around me so that I could focus on the people I was with in restaurants, usually by working with the companion apps on my phone. They both did so very well when the app was properly configured. I’ve seen the Philips app, and it’s pretty basic in terms of configuration. The app that comes with the Reach might be more up your alley.

Thanks, I have 6 months to decide. What I am wondering is, is it just these or would more expensive do better? If I had to based on performance so far, I could live with these as an improvement to my without hearing if I had to.

Your brain has to go through a substantial adaptation period to get used to all of the new sound. Hearing aids may also be set to slowly increase the speech clarity throughout an adaptation period. Lots of sounds may feel loud for a while

Yes there can be an adjustment period, but iIf the hearing aids make your hearing worse, then don’t wait. Get them adjusted immediately.

You might hold and revisit this issue after a month of daily wear. Right now you are getting way more input than you are used to, so everything can be overwhelming. And restaurants are LOUD, so it will be even worse. You likely have a speech in noise type of program which can help i situations like that, but it will still seem loud to you, and you may not notice the subtle difference until you are used to them. Wear them from morning til night as long as they are comfortable for you - take breaks if needed - but your brain needs time to adjust. Another note - hearing generally only gets worse so getting used to them now may help you later.

Be patient and allow your brain time to adjust to your new hearing world. My audio streaming from iPhone is exponentially better sounding after just 3 days. Like new glass prescription x10. All will normalize in time. But the 9050’s have a directional mic setting. Have Costco build you a program for restaurants that makes the mic go where your face points. 3 settings for mic in software.

Not sure what your expectations are. Got my 9050’s on Dec 19. Loss very similar to yours. Played pickleball at rec center with voice in noise program at -3 on app and sound was great. Maybe adjust the app for frequencies. Remember, everything you have aches. New ha doesn’t get new ears. Like trying to buff old paint. Only gonna shine so much.

Thanks all for the responses. Not much has changed, not saying any of this just to have justification to return them. Most likely will just keep them, I need to schedule another visit with COSTCO. Question: Are all of the wires made for these the “detect” enhanced receivers?

You will get the most benefit from your appointment if you bring some recordings of voices and sounds that you want to hear.

Note they can adjust your hearing aids while they are in your ears.

There are over 20 different frequency bands with 3 different sound level inputs that can be adjusted. In addition to all that, there are several additional adjustments that can be made to help with hearing in noise and background noise reduction.

The more effort you put in to getting your hearing aids adjusted, the more you are going to be happy, even if it means going the route.
