BTE vs RIC

RIC is Receiver In Canal. Receiver=speaker in Audiology speak.

Thin tube a.k.a. BTE are larger units than RIC because their speaker is in the aid. They normally come with a full ear mold. New technology comes first to RIC and later to BTE.

RIC aids can have the receiver replace with a more powerful receiver, if necessary. They use replaceable wax guards that are user replaceable to keep wax from the receiver. They can use domes or mold of various sizes.

I had BTE and now RIC. I get better results with the RIC but the BTE was earlier generation.

These days, BTE are normally reserved for those with a sever lose.

My audiologist recommended Phonak Boleros (BTE) and I was not knowledgeable enough at the time to ask about an RIC.

I have both and actually prefer my BTE’s with std tubes with molds. My biggest problem with my HA’s with RIC’s is with wax and the constant changing of my wax traps and their tendency to clog up at the most inconvenient times. Perhaps you should ask your audi why she recommended a BTE over the RIC HA’s?
