Can I use a pair of old earmolds while waiting for my new ones?

It has been 2 weeks now and my earmold impressions still has not been done. I called and they said it can take between 3 to 4 weeks which is ridiculously long, but then again it is the NHS (in UK). I am starting get very impatient because I am still wearing hearing aid with domes and they are causing issues and clarity of speech is just not good enough. I am thinking if I order earhooks to fit my hearing aids from Connevans and then attach my current but usable (my audiologist said they look fine to use as a spare), earmolds, will that be better? Or do they still need to reprogramme my hearing aids?

They will need to be programmed to allow you to fully benefit from them but can’t see why you can’t wear ear moulds before hand anyway.

I’ve bought my ear moulds ( are NHS) since 2011 from Boots as I waited 7 weeks regularly back then on the NHS.

I see what you mean. I did not think to use Boots, then I could have went to audiologist to reprogramme them without needing to waitm How much did it cost you? Probably changed now as 2011 was 12 years ago but just to give a rough idea.

If you can use the moulds and the sound is okay, whilst it isn’t technically set up correctly it may be better for you as a temporary option whilst you’re waiting. I tried domes and was really surprised at how muffled it was in comparison. You also don’t want to be making your ears sore so it may be whatever works better for you in the short term. Some spec savers support nhs fittings now.

That is what I am finding as well. Speech is muffled despite putting my speech focus settings on on my hearing aid app. I will probably give it a go because domes are really not doing it for me. My audiologist actually said domes was not a good idea because of how severe my loss is but I persisted with it and regret my decision now. Cannot wait to get them. Specsavers are not doing NHS audiology here in Wales, well not my local Specsavers anyway.

You don’t know these things until you try them & you are now building your knowledge of what works well for you. Now you know that’s a custom fit and it will help you get things set up right for you. I know it can be really hard sometimes but you are asking the right questions and making good progress. Fingers crossed you get the moulds back soon, you will get there. Everyone’s set up can take a while but it gets a lot easier once you know what works best for you.
