Hello everyone. I am a long time hearing aid wearer who just upgraded to the KS5s. This thread was a great help in my decision, thank you to all of the contributors.
I picked up mine 4 days ago and am getting used to them now. I have been using some low end hearing aids for a while, so these are quite a change. I am very happy so far.
Does anyone know where there is a list of standard programs and what they do? I would like to be informed when I go back for my second visit.

Restaurant = Directional Mics
Party = Directional Mics + greater noise reduction
Music = Omni Directional Mics without any noise reduction
Outside = Omni Directional Mics with noise reduction
Is anyone else here using the Clip+ with iPhone control app? I am having an issue where my Clip+ is going into streaming mode whenever I “wake up” my phone from sleep mode. I have deactivated lock sounds and keyboard sounds like the FAQs suggest and it did not correct the problem. The FAQs state that the Clip+ will exit streaming mode after it no longer detects sounds, but mine remains in streaming mode.

It turns out that issues I was having with the Phone Clip not changing programs for me was because the clip was trying to jump into streaming mode - and when I went into my phones settings and disabled touch sounds, screen lock sounds, etc. the issue was resolved.

That sounds like the same thing I am experiencing, only I went into settings and turned off “keyboard clicks” and “lock sounds” too and my Clip still goes into Streaming Mode. I also slid the rocker switch on the side of the phone to the silent position to no avail. I must be missing something… It must be related to the phone “wake up” but I cant figure out what it is.
Im sure its something simple that Im overlooking. I’ll stop by Costco with my tail between my legs if I dont figure it out today…lol

In my particlar case- the clip+ functioned normally for volume changes but “acted up” when I tried to use the APP to change programs. It seems to work fine now after I disabled those sound sources in my phone settings.

I stopped by Costco today and my said he had never seen that before. He jokingly said (admitted?) that the iPhone app/Clip+ software was still in Beta and glitchy. He called his tech support rep and she suggested uninstalling and reinstalling the app. That fixed it…Beta indeed…lol.
As mentioned earlier, I had the KS 4.0 and liked everything (especially since they were my first ) except the remote not having a readout. I purchased the KS 5.0 HA which I’ve been trying for a couple weeks, and am not really happy with them. The sound just doesn’t sound as “natural” even with attempts to adjust them. They are a bit larger than the KS 4.0, and I dislike the inconvenience of changing batteries compared to using the rechargeable. And the 4.0 are a bit smaller in size. SO… I’m going to give them another week, with some closely watched tests against the 4.0’s, which I’ve put away. Anyone else had the 4.0 and the 5.0?
Interesting. the new KS5’s are ReSound, the KS4’s were Siemens/Rextons. I also found that the new Rexton Quintras (Siemens) sounded more natural than the KS5’s (Resound) in a brief In-store demo at Costco. Other’s have said the same thing.
I am going in later this week for my first return adjustment on my KS5s. I understand that it can have 4 modes set. I am very enthusiastic about the KS5s, but I have a few questions before meeting with my SHS:
MODES
My remote has been set to 3 modes: Automatic, Restaurant and TV. Can anyone suggest a 4th mode I can ask to have added? Perhaps Music? Or is there another which would come in handier?
VOLUME
I am always kicking the volume up about 1-2 presses above the “green line” default setting. I am thinking of asking to have the default volume re-set accordingly. Any reason not to?
HEARING IN GROUP
So far, I have been very satisfied with the KS5s in individual conversation and watching video, but last night was my first experience with them in a group of about 10 people sitting in a circle in a friend’s living room, and I had a difficult time understanding people’s conversation until later when about half the people there left. I started out in Restaurant mode and pointed my head directly at whichever speaker I wanted to hear, but the combined noise of about ten people speaking was just a din most of the time, and only at full volume did I understand anything, straining to do so. In desperation, I tried Automatic and TV too, but nothing worked. When the group broke down to about 5 or 6, then I could understand and participate in the conversation. Any suggestions?
DOMES vs EARMOLDS
With my five year old , I started out with domes but wound up with earmolds. My best recollection was because I was told that I had a “dog-leg” bend in my left canal and I was constantly having to push the left dome back in a little. My hearing would seem to drop off in my left ear, and my GF would look and at tell me I needed to push the left dome back in a little more. It was especially annoying when eating - my normal act of chewing seemed to push the left dome slightly out of place. When I got the earmolds with my old HAs, I liked them and they seemed to make my positioning when putting the HAs on to be “a sure thing” - I always knew they were in right and stayed right.
However, with my new KS5s, my SHS at purchase encouraged me to try out the standard open domes first, suggesting they would give me “a more natural sound” than earmolds and that I might be surprised to find out I like this setup better. In many ways, he was right and I do like the sound. On the other hand, I am back feeling that I have a more difficult and uncertain time inserting my left one and keeping it in place. I feel that the left dome doesn’t remain as far in the ear as the right dome, and it hurts a little when I try to push on it unless I find “the exact right angle upward” which is hard to find - I get resistance I don’t get in the right ear.
I’m left wondering whether I need to be more patient in learning a better “technique” in insertion and re-insertion or whether I should be thinking of going to the earmolds despite the risk he mentioned of less natural sound. He did also say: “I have a lot of steps between open dome and earmolds than you can try before going all the way back to earmolds.”
I may have some additional questions before going back in, but I’ve already said a mouthful, so I guess I will stop here and look for some wisdom and replies.
Maybe a “Music” or “Outdoors” mode - one that has no “special effects.”
My ’s were set for a “new user” and I was told when I go back for my follow up they would make them louder.
Im having a hard time evaluating this too. I mean, it would be difficult for anyone with normal hearing so do we expect the HA’s to be “better than normal” or just help out, you know.
This happens to me too. There seems to be a happy spot where the domes just sit inside. If I try to insert them deeper, they move around and make rubbing noises. I think they are not meant to be “inserted” just resting in their natural place, if that makes sense.
I look forward to hearing about you continued experience with the KS5’s. These ate my first aids and I sucking in all the info I can.
I went to Costco today. They said this is a new model that has only been available for a couple of weeks. Is this the new model based on the Resound Verso 9?

Thank you.
Does anyone know if the PhoneNow feature can shut off the external microphones and run only? My fitter set them up so that nearly unfiltered outside noise is blasting in and phone use is not working well at all. I mentioned it to him the first time and he just kind of shrugged, can someone confirm so I can go back and beat him over the head with it?

Yes, the microphones can be turned off. By default they are set to 3 softer than t-coil, and that setting can be increased to a maximum of 12 dB softer before going completely off.

Outstanding. This is my only real issue with the aids.
I just noticed that one of the cards either included in my package, or maybe I picked it up at the counter, included the url for a great website containing User Guides & Informational Videos for our KS5s.
I found some of them pretty handy - sometimes I get more out of show-me videos than I do reading guides and manuals.

Well, he was right. Thought I might post a followup report for anyone having a similar experience getting their domes in fully and keeping them that way.
First, when I went back, he changed the little receiver on my left to a tiny, more cylindrically-shaped one rather than a “dome.” Next, I understood him to suggest inserting the receiver in a 45 degree angle into the canal.
The smaller receiver certainly helped, but for days afterward I still had problems with getting it fully inserted so that I didn’t lose any volume in the left ear. I thought he said to insert it at a 45 degree angle and I kept trying to do that but remained frustrated until recently when I discussed it with my girlfriend. I insisted that my ear canal wouldn’t allow that. Of course, when I insisted I was following his instructions completely and recited them to her, she said “No he didn’t say at a 45 degree angle upward! He said at a 45 degree angle upward AND 45 degree forward!” Lo and behold, I tried that and she (and he) was right! Now I get them in all the way on the first try - no problem; no discomfort; no loss of volume!
Two lessons: 1) Don’t let frustration overcome your efforts to get them right; and 2) Always take someone along to these adjustments who’s a better and more patient listener than you are!
By the way, today, on two separate occasions, I heard two quick “ding” tones in my right ear. Ive had my hA’s for 2 weeks now and Ive never heard them before. I had Bluetooth on the second time so Im thinking maybe something my iPhone did.
