Hello,
I’m new to the forum. I’m currently under and awaiting an scan. I was referred to ENT after a bad double ear infection last April where both of my ear drums perforated. I had surgery on the left ear when I was 16 after a perforation didn’t heal. I had reoccurring infections from the age of 2 until 16 when they did the surgery. All infections stopped and hearing massively improved.
I’ve had a few hearing tests in the years since and my hearing in both ears has always been normal, just slightly lower on the left.
After this infection last year the hearing in my right ear (which had always been the better of the 2) never recovered and the ear has been left feeling full with lots of pressure.
Hearing tests done in May this year show a tympanogram reading of low typa A on the left with showing normal hearing. Tympanogram reading on the right was high with audiogram showing a mild hearing loss. I do ok mostly but do struggle with hearing people speaking when there is a lot of back ground noise.
Because of these readings, along with the tinitus and pressure the consultant ordered an MRI.
This week I’ve developed another infection. Worst of the symptoms are again in the right and the hearing seems to have dropped more. My GP has emailed ENT to see if they change the MRI from routine to urgent. This was sent on Friday so they should hopefully pick it up tomorrow.
I’m day 5 of a 7 course of antibiotics and my left ear is feeling much better but still really struggling with the right and so worried more damage is going to be caused to my hearing.
I’ve just had a look at both eardrums with my camera and have noticed a small shiny oval growth near the very edge of my eardrum almost like it’s coming out from behind the drum. I don’t think it’s another perforation as I’ve had no discharge at all. What do you think? Do you think I should chase up with the ENT secretary tomorrow or just wait now my GP has emailed them? Don’t worry the camera wasn’t that far down my ear canal, it has a zoom function. Also do you think it looks retracted? This one has always looked a bit different to the right drum because of the surgery but I don’t remember the bones ever being so visible.
Hearing aids, the consultant said I could have if I felt it necessary. My concern is I work in an Sen school with very complex, non verbal children who would definitely pull it out. I can’t tell you how many times a day I have my glasses pulled off my face! I’ve been googling hearing aids and see that there are internal ones available. How do these work? Are they comfortable? I struggle with earplugs so I’m thinking I may struggle with these too when the times comes ![]()
Thanks in advance for any replies ![]()
