Movie theaters in the US are required to provide assistive listening technology. Unfortunately, they all seem to choose the cheapest option possible ( or around here). This is one reason why I like . In my experience, it is both the best and the cheapest. This should result in theaters moving to it over time. Until then, we’ll have to put up with the existing systems.

I believe that working as an IT engineer is a good fit for someone who uses hearing aids. However, it is also true that people outside the industry often don’t know the path to landing such a job. How did you get your position?

In Japan, movie theaters are not legally required to provide accessibility features for the hearing impaired, though some do offer subtitle glasses for rent. Even if becomes widespread, it is doubtful whether movie theaters will adopt it; I suspect it will be implemented at train stations and airports first.

I have an associate degree in electronics technology. I worked for over 35 years at my last company and essentially had several careers there.

  4. Security Engineer

Most of the software and security engineers I worked with had bachelor’s degrees in software and computer related fields. The company specified bachelor’s degrees or related experience in employment ads, but I can’t think of anyone that was hired without the degree.

As for movie theaters and other venues, I suspect you are a bit pessimistic. is inexpensive enough that theaters may view it as reasonable investment in gaining additional customers. There are venues in the US (e.g., churches) that are beginning to adopt Auracast even though they are not required to do so.

That certainly presents a significant hurdle. Wasn’t it incredibly challenging to earn an associate degree while dealing with hearing loss? In Japan, a common issue at facilities equipped with is that staff members often don’t know how to operate them. I suspect the same thing might happen with . For widespread adoption, I imagine it will be necessary for Auracast to activate automatically and be able to locate a power source on its own.

I earned the associate degree long before my hearing declined.

The transmitters I have used and seen require connecting an audio cable and a USB power cable. Once connected, it just works.

That is my experience also - both at home and at work (the museum where I volunteer). It’s not quite that the transmitter “reaches out” and can plug itself into a power source, but it is as simple as plugging in an electric toothbrush or cel phone.

The fact that it has just come to the market. For example, I bought my transmitter and headphones in July of 2025 - one year ago. They were among the first Auracast devices available.

My guess is five to ten years before it is widespread. That does not mean it will not be useful before then. It depends on where transmitters are available in your area and whether or not your hearing aids support it.

So, it really does take five to ten years, doesn’t it? I haven’t seen any equipment in my area yet.
