How accurate are online hearing test?

im going to a ent soon for unrelated issues but i imagine there going to do a hearing test . i was slightly worried about about hearing loss so i decied to try one of the apps and both showed no hearing loss but on some frequencies it would just spike and the next time that frequencie would be about the same as the others and another one would be way up there . so are these test accurate at all ?

I found that most of the online tests which just tell you if you need further testing or not will give an average of all frequencies across both ears, so if you only have a 4k notch for example, overall it can rank as normal. I find https://hearingtest.online147 the closest to my actual but the mimi test app isn’t too far off but uses quite an annoying way to test IMO

These were my results, taken a couple of years ago. The yellow one was from hearingtest online and the other from a test at a hearing aid dispenser.
The online test might be of some interest but I don’t think it’s of any practical use?

I took an online test using my iPhone. Tones and a series of questions. Told me that the tones show normal hearing but my answers to questions showed I had a hearing problem. Wierd since all that expensive equipment at three providers show I have a significant hearing loss which my dear wife will attest to. I did find one that produced an “” somewhat similar to my “official “ one. An iPhone app called Mimi. Probably best not to waste your time with the online stuff as they are just part of the marketing strategy. C

Yes it does closely match my test as well. And the person is not connected to hearing aid vendor which does lends some credibility. Gives a nice explanation of the . No wonder I can’t understand a word she says. LOL.

I tried the ‘Hearing Test’ which can be downloaded from the iPhone and it was very accurate!

From my experience, I’ve found that online hearing tests are not the greatest. That being said, my work uses something called SHOEBOX Audiometry44. It’s an iPad-based hearing test and we’ve been using it for about two years. The results seem very accurate, I can’t sat the same about online tests.

Was told by an audiologist years ago I had significant loss and more recently audiograph showed pretty much same and was done by an NHS audiologist so I guess both results pretty accurate (see audiograph). Out of interest I did a couple on line tests and suppose depends which ones are done but found them vague and didn’t really tell me anything other than I needed to have a full test by a professional. Also the ones I did asked me to turn the volume on my device so that I could hear the tone or music that was played so I don’t really believe these tests are accurate. The tests I had done professionally did other tests including pure tone and helped indicate type and possible reasons for my hearing loss. Maybe useful tho as a start if a person is concerned there may be a problem as they do indicate if a person shows they may have some hearing difficulties. Also I guess many direct a person towards buying a certain product. NHS here in Wales are inviting people to book and go see an audiologist for assessment then refer for a full test if necessary. My test lasted for app an hour and was really thorough and guess am lucky as following this was issued with pretty decent free of charge so ye online tests are a good indicator but don’t in any way replicate full screening.

The only tells part of the story. Word Recognition testing is needed. There is speech I hear at a proper level that my brain does not properly recognize the words.
