The level of parnoia I would need to have to be suspicious enough to come up with a national security risk as a reason to stall importation of hearing aids made elsewhere… would be exhausting. The powers that be should just admit to greed and xenophobia, already, and get it over with!
From what I understand of the system, invoking security risks is essential to set tariffs by presidential decree rather then by consulting Congress. Whether this is justified is being looked at by the Supreme Court. Interesting country, interesting times.
I suspect importers ensure there are decent stocks of , so no reason for panic in the short run…
I reserve the right to make comments on political situations that may affect the availability of choices in hearing aids, in a hearing aid forum. Nobody is required to agree with me.
I agree that I’d rather not see politics, religion, sports, or other divisive topics in this forum. Sadly, these subjects often create division instead of unity, and I really appreciate how united and supportive this forum feels.
We landed here because this thread is about pricing, a major concern for many here- so an important topic. And, yes, healthcare economics is political to large extent, and differs enormously by country. In most places HA costs come essentially down to reimbursement policies (there have been some scathing comments on the strangulation of the NHS in the UK, for instance). The peculiarities of the US are Costco, that many other global users here are probably pretty jealous of, and its new policy of punitive border taxes (“tariffs”). The latter is simply too important to ignore in this debate where it concerns the US situation, but can hopefully be discussed without speculating on the wisdom of voters.
I like your comment, AtillaDaPun “Heaven forbid people should be able to hear what’s going on.”.
I find it odd that Medicare in the U.S. won’t pay for hearing aids, nor even contribute to part of them. But, if you need a super-duper expensive cochlear, they pay.
Same with physician. They pay their part, but won’t pay for a less expensive audiologist visit.
Ditto for some ocular lens implants. Since I had to have special implants to allow glasses to correct me to better than 20:50 (with glasses), Medicare would not pay even for the surgery portion or physician fees. But if I needed off-the-shelf implants like people get for cataract surgery, they pay.
Yep, it’s really odd sometimes when you find out what they will or won’t pay for. I often wonder whether they flipped a coin or threw darts for some of the decisions!
