Jabra Enhance Pros are medical devices sold by prescription only (a qualified determination of the extent and nature of your hearing loss must be made before you can buy such hearing aids). The Enhance Selects, as OTC HAs, would only be allowed to be powerful enough to treat mild to moderate hearing loss and don’t require any diagnostic qualifying exam and fitting by an HCP to be used.
Out of curiosity, I answered questions and uploaded my current to them, which reflect some severe and profound hearing loss in the upper frequencies, and yet I got back a reply that said:
“… based on your answers, our Enhance Select 100 model is best for you …” !!!
I thought the new rules were supposed to make things less confusing and more accurate for potential buyers!
Wow! That’s incredible. I guess “buyer beware” really applies to the experience! Too bad HT doesn’t allow any other emoji voting other than Thumbs Up! Website software other than the Discourse software that HT uses is much richer in the emoji responses allowed pegged to a post like yours.
(I’m just fooling around here, miffed because I just can’t simply add a WOW! or ASTONISHED! emoji to your post!)
Followup: When checking my email this morning, I see I got an email from them saying they reviewed my and tried to reach me by phone. I just replied reminding them that I had asked for responses and recommendations to be in writing and invited them to write back by email as to their further recommendations. I can’t imagine trying to discuss hearing aid recommendations by phone.
Interesting that you mentioned the music program. I am a first time hearing aid user and have been using the 9040’s for about three months. I saw in the new features notice that popped up several times in the Hearlink 2 software that the music program was available and asked the audiologist if it could be added to my hearing aids. He said it is not available. Yet you have it for the same hearing aids. Is it useful for streamed music only or music in general? I’m wondering why he told me it was not available.

Really? I’d rather have the option to discuss live with another person the various plusses and minuses of different brand aids for my particular hearing loss. Plus, I’d get a sense of the sensibility of the person selling aids far better while talking in person. Yes, specs are important, but in my lights the most important thing is the audi who will fit you for the aids you decide to buy. Talking on the phone one-on-one is preferable, for me, to email correspondence in getting a sense of the person i might be working with.

Your Costco is probably lazy and does not want to bother adding it in for you. Either that, or you already have 4 programs selected and there’s no 5th slot available to add in the HiFi Music program in anymore. But if this is the case, you’d just need to give up 1 of the 4 programs you currently have to make room for it.
Take a snapshot of the screenshot below on your phone and bring it to your Costco fitter and ask him to open up the Philips HearSuite software and go to that page and show you if the HiFi Music option is not available in the pull-down menu as shown before you take his word for it. As you can see, I’ve also selected and installed it in my second program in the screenshot. Even if it doesn’t show on his screen, ask him why it shows on my screen and not his screen. And plenty of other 9040 wearers can install the Music program, so why can’t he do it for you?
What the HiFi Music program does is optimize all the settings so that priority is given to being able to listen to music with more accuracy and openness, as opposed to if you use the main program or other programs that are given priority to speech understanding and noise suppression, then the music would not sound as good because music is not a priority in the other non-HiFi Music programs. If you have the HiFi Music program selected and then stream music from whatever device you have, I believe the HiFi Music program settings will be applied to the streaming content as well.
Usually, some of the settings in a Music program are done for the following: minimize compression (probably can’t eliminate it completely but at least minimize it as much as possible), disable noise reduction/suppression, enable Omni mode in the Directionality settings so that your aids will pick up all the sounds around you, disable sudden transient loud sound suppression, remove or minimize feedback that can suppress gain and do phase change and a small frequency shift, and sometimes the gain curves are also adjusted, usually to enhance the low frequency volume a little more, and maybe also some spots in the mid and/or high range as well.

I would never equate talking on the phone with a salesperson I will never meet with talking on the phone to someone I have already met and developed a sense of knowledge and trust with. The former experience lacks voice inflection, eye contact and posture. In addition, when making an investment of this size and complexity from a person I will never meet, which will affect my health and comfort for several years, I would expect all representations to be in writing. Another reason to prefer dealing with Costco Hearing rather than this new method of sales at long distance. Having purchased hearing aids from Costco in past years I already trust them.
PS That’s part of what’s lacking in this new category of - “Over the Counter” hearing aids. It’s a misnomer. In most cases, there’s no “counter.”
I have a solution that works for me…
My new hearing aid practitioner provides two reports.
Target User Report
Target Pro Report
Why?
I always wondered what was turned on, and how my hearing aids are set up.
I have Phonak Audeo Paradise P90R’s that are almost 2 years old. I had to change practitioners to get them setup properly. These reports would have helped me immensely if the audiologist had shared them.
I couldn’t hear properly in a quiet environment, let alone a noisy one. I hear much better now with the help of the new practitioner.
Thank you so much for this. I have only three programs installed and didn’t realize there were so many other programs available. As for my , I think he must be lazy - I also found out my hearing aids are on firmware 1.0.1 and 1.1.0 seems to be available.
So even though we do not correctly fit mild to moderate (I am close but have zero head room) it is our perception is that drives this. Of course Jabra knows better.
Also, the Premium package ($200 more) works with specialists on Zoom, carries a longer warranty and loss coverage.
I also, like you, should have been told that a prescription product would better fit best hearing outcome. Two specialist and one account rep did not fess up even though I quizzed two of the three. But how could they without jeopardizing their job.
Wo premium (Select 300,50r also?) there are no custom adjustments by specialist BUT since actual hearing tests of any sort (in-situ or ) are not done with in our ears there is no way that I can see that even a rough fit can be made. The adjustability range that I could do from app is very limiting as I could only increase output at any frequency a small amount. I ran some checks and as HA are set, after adjustment period, I am setup low everywhere and especially 3khz and above.
The Plus earbud style may have a built-in test capability.
Jabra Enhance Select has very good products and the Zoom support is good but the implementation at this price point is very poor. The specialist were very helpful and a joy to work with but they do not have the missing part to work with.
