I just want to see the "new ___" button and also the button for new responses to threads I've been viewing. How?

Appreciate all the hard work, but this is too busy for me. I just want to be able to click a button that says "New posts" and a button that says "New responses" (that's not what the old button said, I cannot remember what it said, but it was a button you click when there are new responses in a popular topic that you have posted in). Where are those buttons?
