Is it normal to miss whole conversations in a quiet setting?

Hey so I understand hearing aids aren’t perfect so missing a few words here and there are completely normal. However, I miss WHOLE conversations in quiet environments and just understand a few words. Any fixes for this? I did and 2 fine tunings

Well no it wouldn’t be “normal” but what is a common complaint is that doesn’t guarantee anything or restore your hearing,regardless of some who try to say it’s the “gold” standard, but seriously you do need to go back and explain to your Audiologist that things are just not “working out” your audogram isn’t too bad and one would expect to help you, ask them to check your acoustics and to try different formula’s, what’s your ?

Quiet environments should be the easiest situation for your hearing aids. As suggested, you should address that with your audiologist.

The magic of hearing aids is all about the programming and the fitting . As someone else said, quiet environments are the easiest space for hearing aids . If your aids are not working for you (and your does not look complex ), you either have to go back and get the re-programmed or return them and find someone else who will do a good job for you.

So as @tenkan said , it is not normal . That’s what hearing aids are for

It happens to me sometimes when I’m not facing someone, and if theyre mumbling the sound around me doesnt matter because I will not hear them. However, it sounds like this is not just an occasional issue and is a longterm issue that definitely needs to be brought up with your audiologist like the other replies have said.

For me it depends on how far away the speaker is. Around an ordinary dining room table, sure I can hear people if there isn’t a lot of cross-conversation and background noise. Make that a huge, long table like in a conference room, not so much. Some people do have voices that travel better, though, and it’s not just a matter of volume.

That’s the same problem I’m having. These Audicus Spirits are not doing the job for me. I’m looking forward to new aids in about 2 months.

For example, we had a substitute minister preaching yesterday, and he was good, but a few times his voice would trail off, such as when he would say: “…so that’s one thing a christian should not do because it will lead to ………” ???. I still don’t know what it leads to!

Or other times when his voice became low, and the audience laughed. So, to keep from being embarrassed, I laughed also. (what a hippocrit I am)

One thing I will tell my audiologist: “the new aids must have noise cancellation.”

What hearing aids on 2026 are the best in this regard? Advice appreciated.

My loss is worse than yours, but I completely understand your issue. In my home where it’s 35db at it’s most quiet, I can hear a police scanner 25ft away. In the real world where it’s perhaps 55db - 60db I have issues. Retail point of sale, hard to hear a clerk that is on the other side of the counter; doctor’s office when he’s two feet away; bank teller is hard to understand. I tend to use my Roger On in more quiet places than noisy places. An otolaryngologist explained that I will have trouble in venues with tall ceilings and walls that are far apart because sound is going every where. Smaller rooms concentrate the speech and easier for the to pick up speech. I have tried adjusting speech focus with no real improvement.

- A total waste of time and money in my situation. If REM is the gold standard then you wouldn’t need volume control on your HAs. You should never need to raise the volume on your HAs because REM ensures the correct amount of amplification is delivered to your ear canal.

A Roger On used in pointing mode has helped in my situations.
