My wife and I are reading a big book on fungi. We read a bit together every day. She reads aloud and I listen, it's a way of ear training for me and we read subjects that interest both of us.
A few chapters ago, there was a chapter about therapeutic effects of some mushrooms. For hearing loss they mentioned studies on Psilocybin, Lion's Mane, and Turkey Wing mushrooms.
I went to the web, especially, but not exclusively https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2 where I know at least the papers are at least peer reviewed. I read about the things seems to work on lab animals and humans. Of course lab animals mostly and whether it works or not depends on what particular type of damage the ears have. Of course, everything on the Internet comes with a dose of doubt.
Psilocybin seems to be a good candidate, but it's illegal. I did find it's legal in other countries but traveling isn't cheap and since I still work, it's inconvenient.
Lion's Mane seemed possible so I immediately started taking Lion's Mane capsules, simply because I can, and there might be a chance that they would help. What do I have to lose but the cash for one bottle of the capsules. I'm in good health and it doesn't seem like they have negative effects that concern me.
Weeks pass, they don't seem to be doing anything. I'm doing more research and considering Costa Rica for my next vacation (psilocybin is legal there), which won't come before next August. All of a sudden, turning on a light switch made a click!!! I thought it was a silent switch.
Other things are getting, for lack of a better word "clicky". So is it placebo effect? Or is something good happening? Containing my optimism because I've fooled myself before, I wait.
Now my computer mouse is clicking. I've heard that on quiet days but it now seems constant. A few days later some of the keys on my laptop keyboard are clicking, I've NEVER heard them click before.
OK, I'm starting to get excited (thus the bold typeface above)
I'm a musician, and since COVID, the bass notes have always sounded out of tune until the rest of the band comes in, then they seem to change pitch.
Last weekend we called a song that starts with bass for a few bars, then the rhythm guitar enters, and it didn't change pitch. More experiments, the bass is no longer out of tune.
I will continue to take the Lion's Mane hopefully it'll get even better, but right now I'm pretty happy about these gains.
Is it permanent? Is it just a phase? Is it the mushrooms? Is my body finally just recovering from Long COVID damage? Who knows at this point.
One thing for certain, is this: I'm not fooling myself. I haven't changed my hearing aid setup or anything else, but new things are clicking and others are sounding sharper than before. Including things that I didn't know made a clicking sound. And after a few weeks, I figured the LIon's Mane wasn't working so I wasn't looking for it. Since I have trouble with the consonants P, T, and their sound-alikes, this might lead to me understanding conversation better. Or many not. I've not nothing to lose by continuing to take them.
At this point it's not a major change, but definitely noticeable and delightrul. The bottle isn't empty yet.
Of course, I'm not a doctor, and am not recommending this for anyone else, just reporting what seems to be happening to me.
