After a two year layoff I returned to piano and what a disappointment. I could not reconcile the scale but kept paying pieces I knew. No imorivement. I switched to guitar and the 3 low frequency strings were not identifiable. Went to audiologist and sure enough a disparity between both ears is about 10 decibels at the very start of low frequency. The lines then cross each other but remain parallel. This means I am hearing two signals and the brain gives me its best interpretation which is not at all usable for music.
Many reasons can account for this but the mind is just doing what it has always done: create a synthesis of the low input info. I decided I am going to fix this because life without music is quite unbearable. I am in the midst of doing this and I think someone in my condition should try it. Forget about play along and making music with others for now.
Play your scales and hum along. I am doing this for a week now and you will find that the humming which is accurate will bring in glimpses of the correct sound from the instrument.
Next step: play simple old melodies and after they feel comfortable transpose them into a different key. It seems you have to start from scratch with each key. The main approach is repetition until the brain begins to make the correction.
I am not out of the woods because the low E string still evades recognition, but I have made appreciable strides with the low D and A strings.
Again: hum along with scales and repetition is the key until something gradually happens. I started with the high E string. This did not take long to correct. Then the B string and a lot of work was needed to reconcile these two. I played the c, d, e and f scales. Eventually I agreed with what I heard. Going to the G proved challenging because I could not make sense of the A note.
I suggest you give this a try but you will have moments where you just want to give up. Stick to it because the mind can be helpful in making the pitch true. This may be comparable to self hypnosis. If you convince the mind it will accept it.
