Hi - delighted to be here.
I’ve had lifelong ski slope hearing long and bad experience with previous hearing aids (was only given one when I was growing up - thought I had loss in just one ear!!). Previously had in the ear Oticons in my early 20s - they broke constantly. Then had Phonaks, which also didn’t work (I listen a lot to music and kept taking them off to put headphones in… and just stopped wearing them).
Anyway, now I’m older and realising I need to protect my cognitive function. Got Phonak Audeo P90s from a local provider here in Qatar. There is such limited choice and support available over here.
I’ve had first fitting and am now in week 2. Think I need to take charge of the conversation with the audiologist but not really too sure what I need! So looking for guidance.
- At the moment, I have open domes, since that was what I tried before. No feedback, but I can see from reading that this might not be the best choice. She was going to give me closed initially… should I try these?
- Streamed music is incredibly tinny. How can I adjust this?
- I feel some level of amplification (I can hear car sounds and beeps, for instance) but I don’t feel like there is a substantial difference in speech recognition yet. Will that come? What should my expectations be and what questions should I be asking from the audiologist?
- I’ve found I’ve turned up the volume on the Phonak app a couple of times. Is this an indication that I should be requesting the volume to be increased? In first fitting, she reduced it from the initial setting as everything sounded very artificial.
- My left ear gets itchy inside throughout the day. Is this a sign of poor dome fitting? It doesn’t feel like the tube is rubbing.
I should say that culturally, providers here will just go with what is requested rather than make proactive suggestions, so I need to be better informed to guide these conversations.
Appreciate all the help!
