I have a severe/profound hearing loss. My hearing loss became apparent about 25 years ago. I've been wearing for about 20 years. I've always been aware of a certain background noise, which is kind of a high frequency hiss, which I assume is tinnitus, but most of the time I ignore it and it's not an issue for me.
However, in the past few months, I've become aware of a new noise in my left ear. I thought about how to describe it. It sounds most like a cross between a frog croaking and the sound of a fingernail pulled down a few tines of a comb. The sound is an irregular pattern, consisting of one to six or seven pings or croaks with brief pauses of about one second in between.
When I focus on this sound, it is continuous. More like a frog croaking than a cricket chirping. I've tried moving around, holding still, being totally relaxed, holding my breath. Nothing seems to alter the random frequency of the pings.
