Oticon OPN S3 - programming

Hi all,

I went in to see my audi again today as I had lost the ability to control the volume from the button the back of my . Last visit she had added a new program (previously only had 1), and that, I gather, by default changed the button to being a program control instead of volume. But I digress, the question I wanted to ask was related to the programming and different options available for the OPN S3.

I’m finding that I get a lot of clipping/compression when walking outdoors, which seems to have the HA cut off completely and I’m then unable to continue to follow the conversation. When my audi looked at the compression options today, they found that she is unable to adjust any of it, and that there is 3.7 compression between 4-6k. Currently they are setup with NAL, and in her Genie 2 software, this appears to be the only option. Is there a way that she could go ahead and use a different programming option as I’ve read about here? Or that the compression settings could be unlocked and then lowered?

@BrianMB, I defer to @Volusiano for his expert knowledge about programming of OPN products.

Curious, though…I believe that OPN comes standard with VAC+ programming (Oticon’s proprietary fitting program), unless the audiologist changes the programing to another rationale, such as NAL-NAL2. Therefore, I will be interested in learning why no other programming options are available to your audiologist in Genie (If you ever find out why).

Re the “cutting out”–does movement of the hearing aid, pressure on it in any way, or even wind buffeting happen to contribute to your cut outs? Just wondering, since I’m having trouble with intermittent cut-outs on the OPN-S1R myself when pressure is applied near the volume/program toggle buttons and the top microphone. Now I’m wondering if this has anything to due with compression adjustments. Hmmm…Thanks.

I’m not sure why the OP’s audi is unable to program for the Oticon VAC+ fitting rationale. After all, it is the default rationale used by Oticon for their default program. I’m pretty sure it’s available in the OPN original and the S. Maybe the audi doesn’t know how to select it properly. Did they make a call to Oticon support for help with finding and selecting the VAC+ option?

As for the cut out happening when outdoors, I’m not sure why. If the VAC+ has been restored and it still happens, I can only surmise that maybe there are very loud sounds outdoors where the OP is and the Transient Noise Management feature is set to high and it tries to suppress the sound to a lower volume unsuccessfully, resulting in cut outs. The first thing I’d try would be to turn off the TNM feature to see if it makes any difference.

But if VAC+ is not used and the others like NAL is being used, I’m not really sure if the cut out and high compression is related to these other fitting rationales being used or not.

Beside VAC+, I also have and NAL-NL1 in 2 of my programs and I don’t notice high compression or cut out issues on my OPN 1. So I’m not sure why the OP is experiencing cut out, but then mine is not the S like the OP’s. Maybe the OSO changes the dynamic of the fitting rationale somehow.

@anon66854306 It might have been my mis-understanding as to the fitting rationale, but I’m pretty sure she said NAL. I’m back in on Friday again to check up and see how things are, so I will confirm then. Hopefully she will have come back with a solution to knowing how to change the rationale within Genie 2. If not, hopefully she will be taking the advice of @Volusiano and calling in to Oticon tech support to find out how to do this.

For the cutting out, definitely wind noise is a factor. Walking outdoors with my wife, the wind comes along and I’m seeming to catch only every other word or every third word she says. There was an option that was moved from Medium to off, which I believe was wind management, however this hasn’t made any difference.

@Volusiano the outdoors cutting out situation has been walking along the street or in the parking lot at the shopping centre. No heavy trucks, etc. that would constitute a loud environment. Definitely, next visit will be checking with the audi to see if she has found a way to change the rationale and make the necessary adjustments to better fit me.

So I was initially mistaken. Up through today, the were set with VAC+ only. Today the audi made a call to Oticon and was advised how to use alternate rationales. So I have now VAC+, adjusted by , NAL NL2 default adjustment and NAL NL1 also at default.

With REM today, we found that in all situations I was way over amplified in the mids, 1-3k and way under on the highs 4-6k. This was all adjusted, however we neglected to run a feedback manager after, so this will be done on Monday.

REM will be done for the other 2 rationales on Monday as well.

Hopefully once I get to try out vac+ with the proper adjustment and feedback most all issues will be sorted.
