Yeah Dan, we have many dialects is Scotland, some are extreme, and unless you are basically from that area, you will struggle badly, most have very little resemblance to English… Perhaps the worst dialect I came across, was the Island of Burgh in Shetland, Burgh had been cut off from the Shetland mainland, for thousands of years, or up until approximately 1967, when they built a bridge, worst thing the ever did IMO
Burgh dialect was like no other, a bastardisation of old English (thou & thee) Norwegian & Danish, with some Old Scots thrown into the mix, and they spoke at speed… I couldn’t understand a Burgh man, it was for me virtually impossible… At this particular time, I was night shift supervisor in the largest Pelagic fish factory in Europe, one of my staff was Burgh John, now John, had the strongest Burgh dialect I had ever heard, and one evening he decided to speak to me (nightmare) ffs it was as if I was talking to an alien, I just hoped I was saying yes and no at the correct junction
later on, I spoke to John Smith, a Lerwick man (approximately 6 miles from Burgh, as the crow flies) I said, “See that Burgh John, I can’t understand a single word he says”… John Smith said,”Kevin, I am Shetland born and bred, and I can’t understand him either”
The difference in accent over 6 miles was unbelievable… Cheers Kev
