I’ve noticed that when I’m out in the rain either under an umbrella or covered area. My hearing aids don’t seem to know what to do about the “noise”.

I’ll notice something like a noise cancelling feature switching on and off periodically… I’ll go from normal sound to almost like it turns off for a few seconds.

Is this normal?/

All I can say is that rain appears to make a lot more noise than I thought it did, before hearing aids. Most ’s in an automatic mode will listen to that noise for a bit and if it is not changing the gain will be reduced to make it seem quieter. It may even be quieter than it is for someone with normal hearing. I notice it most often in a vehicle on a smooth road. When the HA’s lock into noise reduction mode it almost seems too quiet.

As smart as hearing aids have become, they still sometimes have problems with very complex sounds like heavy rain, road noise, and some machinery.

Years ago when noise management first became a thing, I had lots of people complain that they felt like the hearing aids were “shutting down” under certain conditions. The engineers at the lab told me that it was multiple features activating at the same time, and reducing the input too much.

To add to eric.cobb, most of these systems can be adjusted. The sensitivity can be increased or decreased. This has made a big difference with my aids.
