I have Paradise P90R’s that were provided by an Audi who never set them up properly. It’s the set up that’s so important. He was a gentleman. But I wouldn’t buy chiclets from him.
My new setup master has improved the setup
My hearing is much worse now than when I got the P90’s.
Just saying the setup is more important than I knew way back. And accurate hearing tests are so important.
I think hearing aids are sold like cars. But cars aren’t medical equipment.
I was once on a “casual” ride on a trail. No cars for a couple miles. Went off the trail on a tricky turn and down a ravine. Stopped by trees. (!) So so glad I was wearing a helmet. Shins, hands, elbows, not so blessed. I already was a believer in helmets. Just the fall from your head’s riding height to the pavement is enough to ruin everything.
Today a pack of kids were riding scooters on my road near my home. One was hit by an SUV. The kid likely lost all his teeth. He hurt a leg He was the one with a helmet on. They ride like punks. Wrong side. Right side. All over. His mother road with him in the ambulance.
I’m an old has been biker. I talked to them all a month ago. First summer riding my mc 5 friends were killed. I thought old muscle memory was good enough. I’ve dropped my electric bike. No harm. Just a stern warning to self
I ride a bike path with a speed limit of 15 MPH. I was taken down by a rider who did u-turn in front of me with no warning and no signal. I was overtaking her at about 12 MPH . Low speed crash. I hit my head on the ground hard enough to knock one of my out of my ear. I wear a helmet, so my head wasn’t hurt, but I had a bruise that was about 5" x 8" for weeks.
You may think you ride safely, but you can’t control what other people will do. A helmet can provide protection that you may need spme day.
For all the folks advising to wear a helmet; you are absolutely right!
It’s just that I’m Dutch, and we’re not used to wearing a helmet. I think it will take one or two more generations before we start wearing them.
Phonak windblock has been around for a long time and hasn’t been improved a lot since its inception. It works by attenuating sound in the frequency range most affected by wind noise which is below 1.5kHz when it detects large transient differences between the input for each of your hearing aid microphones as these are unlikely to be acoustic sounds. I understand that it has three detectors.
Oticon’s wind and handling noise stabiliser introduced with Oticon Real circa 2023 is more sophisticated working across the entire frequency range in 24 bands and in combination with their deep neural network noise suppression so its not surprising that you’re preferring this solution while cycling .
This white paper below may be of interest to you:
Another solution for cyclists to reduce wind noise is placing the microphone of the aid in the ear canal which can be achieve using a Resound with M& receiver or a deep fitting . These may or may not be appropriate for you so talk to your audiologist about them for more guidance.
I’ve had 3 pair of P hearing aids supplied by workman’s compensation. I’m grateful. My Paradise P Rs had just been released when I got them.
I’ve watched the conversation about Lumity since they were first released. Thought, “I need those!”
I’m watching the Sphere discussion. Thought, “Glad I didn’t get the Lumity”. And “ Sphere. I need those”
I “think” that the Sphere is much better than my Paradise P90s
Marketing?
Heck it’s like buying a car. “I’ll take the red ones!”
It’s good to see real improvement. I need to hear real improvement
In the above linked Oticon white paper, their testing only applies to people riding bikes.
Because in other situations and the speaker are most of the time in different directions.
Thinking more, while riding my bike the speaker was on my side.
Finally got the eargears. I think they are too expensive for what they are, and customs held them up for some extra import tariffs
But they work pretty good for windnoise!
Installing them is a pain, so I did what you did; I use them on my 10 year old phonaks when going for a serious bicycle ride.
The aids are easier to swap than installing the eargears
