Poll: Audio Priority — Local Playback vs Auracast Announcements (Airports)

Triggered by a discussion in this thread, it may be helpful to run a poll before development.

This refers to airport announcements such as boarding calls or gate changes, not general information like destination weather.

Poll (32 votes — closed at migration)

  • Local playback has priority — announcements stop when I start playing my own audio — 0 votes
  • Announcements have priority — my local playback pauses or stops — 18 votes
  • Both are mixed — I manually pause my own playback when an announcement starts — 2 votes
  • None of the above — I need more advanced settings to adjust the priority of each app — 12 votes

I suspect this poll is going to have results that vary widely from general population of hearing aid users. Just being on the forum probably means one is geekier than average and then add in the selection bias of who would choose to participate in such a poll. One of the most common complaints I hear about streaming is having notifications interrupt streaming. I’m guessing the more advanced approach is harder than it sounds and runs a big chance of running into app compatibility issues.

Most people using Microsoft Office change no default settings. This is why it is important to pick good defaults.

I chose the advanced settings as that gave the closest answer.

Ideally, it would be nice if there was a way to get a notification of an upcoming announcement. An analogy would be the telephony call waiting beep. If you are on a call and a second call comes in you get notified by a distinct beep. That would let you choose to take the incoming call or let it roll over to voicemail.

The other choice that would be nice to have is the ability to ignore repeat announcements. If they keep rebroadcasting that the flight is delayed - there is no need to keep hearing that until something new comes along. e.g. the problem has been resolved and service is expected to resume shortly.

I am not sure how one will be able to automatically switch between 2 Broadcasts. If I am listening to TV #2 in the lounge via Auracast, how will I know if the Announcements for Gate 16 in the terminal is making a boarding call? Will they use a flashing light or a terminal screen that shows which gates are making new announcements?

At home, switching between the Homespot BA210 connected to my TV and the Floogoo FMA120 connected to my laptop isn’t seamless. I’ve got to stop the TV stream then connect to the laptop.
