All, surgery was completed yesterday. The placement and implant portion of the surgery went well and as expected, per the surgeon.
I ended up having to stay overnight. My cochlears have a wide base which increases the risk of CSF (Cerebral Spinal Fluid) leaks, and it happened so they had to take some muscle tissue to plug it up, and wanted to monitor me overnight as a precaution. I’ve only been on Tylenol and antibiotics so far, but they’ve sent me home with a bunch of good stuff in case I need them.
I am on strict instruction to not exercise for a month due to both the surgery and the CSF plug, as I need to give the plug some time to heal and allow some scar tissue to form around and over it. Over time the risk will decrease of leakage, but for the next week or two I need to keep a eye out for any leaks.
My ear feels like some weird pressure is being applied to it despite the bandage being off. I feel very conscious of it but they’ve said I can shower it fine (just let water run off it) and walk. They used surgical glue on me so no follow up for suture removals.
Activation is on 4th August still. So I’m excited for that still. But also very nervous. I’m hoping the implant works well for me, very nervous it may not!
Wanted to share my experience in case anyone ever runs into CSF issues or are told they have a risk. The team were amazing and the surgical team themselves came to check on me two times and ran some tests on me and checked for visible leakage.
