Hello wonderful souls
Before we go into this, here's my question: Any musicians out there with heavy hearing loss? What do you do about the warbling? How would you get back to good old analog technology?
I'm a 44 year old. I've worn hearing aids for my entire life. My loss is 70%. They say it's drug induced (at birth), but I also have only one kidney which is something that often comes with hearing disability. Not sure about the cause. If someone can shed light or share thoughts, please go ahead.
I've worn for the last 20 years. The ones I'm wearing now are from 2008.
In short, what I'm saying below is this: My old analog ones - objectively! - still sound much better than the new ones.
I've tried countless new ones ever since, and almost all of them show one or more of the following problems:
- tonal sounds like female voices come warbling and distorted. sound design is nearly impossible.
- no bass vs horrible own voice (vent size issue)
- environment noise is sometimes aggressively squashed (even if in the software the aggressiveness is set to 0)
- it's harder to hear people standing a bit away from me than with my old ones
The thing is:
- I have A LOT of conversations in my workplace
- I make music, mostly with headphones on, electronic
- I go to concerts
- I appreciate environment noise
I know a lot about soudn processing and hearing aid physics. Why isn't the industry capable to create devices that sound as natural and linear as the old analog ones?
Cars driving by sound like spaceships. Birds in trees sound like alien bleeps. Making music is near impossible with all the compute that destroys the original sound.
I'll give you an example: I'm testing Starkey devices. So far the best I've tried but still worse than my old ones. Here's why:
- aggressive suppression of non-speech. I feel like I'm inside a cotton ball.
- even in the seemingly linear music program, sounds are handled differently depending on the background sound they're played against. Sometimes transients are so harsh it actually hurts, even when it's just a piano playing.
- at concerts, voices sound like they have a ton of chorus on them
- language comprehension is difficult as soon as there are more people at the table.
- for some reason they're super big and make me look like an alien.
Okay, I think I've shared enough. If anyone has ideas how I can solve the issue of what seem to be overly aggressive or intrusive devices, please let me know. Thank you in advance!
