Our book group is reading “True Biz” by Sara Novic which might be of interest to some in this forum. It is about a teenage girls who has very poor hearing. She has a cochlear implant and transfers from a public school to a school for the deaf. There are many things in this novel that I could relate to such as when someone talks to her she misses some of the words in a sentence. In this book, there is a blank line where the word would be just as she would experience it. There is quite a lot in this book including the controversy over special education vs. mainstream education. Implants, sign language, whether or not there is such a thing as deaf “culture”. In some ways the book seems to romanticize being deaf. Also, there is no mention of some of the newest technology such as google glasses.
