Weird, I’d thought I’d responded to this but it must not have gone though.
Just literal gap detection. Within tone is usually shorter than between tone (i.e. a gap between two 500 Hz tones versus a gap between a 500 and 600 Hz tone). Forced choice “is there a gap here or is there not a gap”? and then psychometric staircase to 50% correct. I have a little program in R somewhere on an old hard drive, and possibly python too if you’re into that stuff. To be fair I also basically had 16 hours of ear training while I was writing up the program, but most people have thresholds under 10 ms. Children are worse and develop over time. In the auditory processing world, more than 20 ms gap detection is considered disordered and hearing aids aren’t that good, IIRC.
For interest, frequency acuity in a normal hearing human can also be ~1 Hz. Interaural timing differences can be detected down to 10 μs in some settings. Both timing and frequency acuity are damaged by hearing loss, with more severe hearing losses being associated with worse acuity with some variability (probably for etiology of the hearing loss, i.e. damage to the cochlea beyond just outter hair cells).
