New hearing aid - oticon static

What you’re likely hearing is the noise floor of the aid; it’s air particles (Brownian Motion) hitting the microphone. Audible if you have good low frequencies.

The 60dB receiver appears to trigger a better low level filter because Oticon realises these will be fitted to the mildest losses.

Really?? I have tinnitus too. I know it’s not the masker feature because I told her to turn it off. I brought the static noise up to her at my appt last week and she didn’t have much to say about it.

That’s not circuit noise then. Sounds like there’s a tinnitus masking program running.

That could be too. But that should be a separate program and not in the general program.

I don’t think it’s the tinnitus feature. We went over this and I can see in the app, it’s not the masker. Sounds like I need to make an appt and have her test everything out. This seems to be an issue with the intent. I had an oticon for 5 years and I don’t think this was ever an issue. Although I do notice my older aid makes a static sound too. I had to replace my old one for the intent because it wasn’t working properly.

I suspect you may want to try a different brand of hearing aid, or a closed dome if using an open dome. if it bothers you too much.

Or modify expansion feature or simply get used to it, because that’s what is probably heard by people with normal hearing.

I am a new Oticon user and have the same issues (both ears, worse in the right.) Mine were fitted by a VA audiologist and when I returned for the 30 day tune-up, she listened to my concerns and added two new programs from her computer to the “General” that I had. Now I can choose from “General”, “Comfort”, and “Noise in Background”. The latter two reduce the static significantly although I still hear ‘rustling paper” static when chewing or walking on wooden floors, etc.

The other issue I have is the harshness of the sound. While watching TV I can, of course, turn up the HA volume, but the voices and soundtrack are much ‘tinnier’ than if I revert to normal, non-augmented hearing. I’m very surprised at the lack of high fidelity sound from these Aids. I have to wonder if my experience is unique to Oticon and Phillips, or if Phonak, Jabra, etc may offer a better sound ??

I have the same issues!! I have to turn the high frequency sounds down. They are too loud for me in the same sense.

Some amount of running noise is to be expected with any hearing aid, at least when programmed for a significant hearing loss, and most audible in a quiet environment. If you look up any manufacturer’s datasheet you will even find a specification for equivalent input noise.

If you have normal hearing in your other ear you would certainly be more likely to hear it than in your aided ear. Conversely, the noise would be less audible in your poorer (aided) ear.

All this being said, normal running noise and abnormal static noise sound very different, and it sort of takes being familiar with what “wrong” sounds like in order to diagnose an issue. Running EAA in a test box and comparing to published specs would be more conclusive, though.
