Who can adjust hearing aids?

My Mother has a set of Jabra Enhanced Pro 10 Mini. Over the ear. From Costco. She has an appointment with an Audiologist. Can he adjust them or do we have to go back to Costco? We had repaired/replaced and not sure if they adjusted the feedback properly. They told me they adjusted the feedback to max months ago, now after a replacement one is making some noise. (Not sure if that one was adjusted to max?) She does have a considerable amount of hearing loss. Not sure if I should go back to Costco and have them adjusted? Or since we have an appointment with an audiologist, can they do it?

You should in the first instance go back to Costco, only because most other audiologist clinics won’t do adjustments on “Jabra” even tho they are just rebranded ReSound models, so all that needed is ReSound SmartFit software, easier to get Costco to sort.

Is this an Aud. that she has a relationship with … if not they will probably NOT adjust them !

Start with Costco. They will help you for free including reprogramming and parts as you paid for the service when the aids were sold. Then if still unsatisfied you can consider newer aids from Costco or spending more at an audiologist who may or may not provide better results. It’s a hearing journey that likely needs more than a single appointment anyway.

Audiologist is likely to try to sell you need new aids when you might not that depending upon how well Costco can get you sorted.

I was in the process of ordering a new set of from an audiologist (waiting on workers comp approval) and I asked if she could apply the new hearing test results to my old Kirkland Signature 9 s while I was waiting. She said no, ostensibly because the KS9s were coded for Costco reps only. That turned out not to be true. When I got my own programming setup for Phonak HAs, I was able to program them without any issues.

This is one of the reasons I moved to self programming my hearing aids many years ago. This is the general attitude of most hearing aid fitters and audiologist I have dealt with. Not all I have learned from this forum. Some are fantastic but difficult to find.

There is a area in this forum. It’s a little hidden but it’s there. Lots of help and information is there if you are curious and want to learn more about self programming.
Look for “Muted”.

Check the forums as suggested. With a recent aid you would need a Noahlink Wireless or converted Airlink 2, a PC or way to run Windows virtually, and the fitting software for the brand of hearing aids which you can obtain via the forums.

Not sure about Jabra 10’s but the Jabra Enhance Pro app (in the google play store) for 20’s and 30’s from Costco has a feature under Online Services → Request assistance. If you know what changes you want made, you can request that online, and within a reasonable time, Costco techs should update your settings and notify you that you can get the answer in the app – and if they change anything, you can download the updated settings to your phone/hearing aids.

In no defence of the particular situation: some Costco models have been locked, while there’s always a legacy risk in taking on hearing aids where you’re unsure/unable to verify the warranty situation and you’ve adjusted them but the client decides they aren’t working subsequent to your intervention.

Costco will definitely help but she will need a current hearing test within the last 6 months or will have to get hearing tested there at Costco, and of course she will need a Costco membership

I recently had a new hearing test at Costco, wore the Rexton Trax 42s that I use for backups, and asked if they could still be updated. Not sure how old they are but they were new when the KS6 was the current Kirkland aid. The audiologist did update them to the new test. I wore them the rest of the day, and they are noticeably improved and work great.

It is your guys, all of you potential patients, expectation that non-costco audiologists stay on top of which Costco hearing aids are and are not locked? That information isn’t freely given anywhere. I know it because I participate in this forum and it’s known in the grey market world, but if we call a manufacturer and say “hey, can I program the current Jabra generation with your software?” we will often be TOLD no. In reality, some years it’s been no, some years it’s been yes, sometimes you can give one of these off brand manufacturers a sob story about a patient in the hospital on their deathed and they’ll give in and send you the software you need, but often not. This clinician may honestly think she cannot program them.

Just remember it’s not “special” software, it’s the standard software that most clinic’s use, Costco rebranded models haven’t been locked for many years now, so no need to ask the manufacturer or give a deathbed request, it’s most likely the difference in brand name on these rebranded models that confuses them, they don’t realise they are exactly the same.

Have you contacted these manufactures recently and asked for the software?

The Philips software was readily available to everyone for a few months, did you download a copy? I did.

So, I guess the answer is that yes, you do expect clinicians who do not have anything to do with these devices to always be on top of these devices and looking out for software for these devices.

Bernafon not needed as Costco don’t supply them anymore, but yes Phillips would need to be installed, so Sennheiser is target
Jabra is SmartFit and as you mentioned Rexton is Connexx, I can’t see why it’s too hard for clinics to stay up in their game in the industry, it’s all easy enough.
